Young House Love » Reader Redesigns » Adding Board & Batten With Coat Hooks To The Foyer By The Front Door

Adding Board & Batten With Coat Hooks To The Foyer By The Front Door

A little bit of us is always envious of a proper entryway in a home (since both of ours have been just a door that opens into a room). Plus, with our own plans to do some sort of board and batten in our hallway eventually, we’re totally loving Jenna Sue’s sweet makeover of her foyer. Here’s her email:

We’re in the middle of 92,835 projects at our house, but we recently completed one that we’re pretty proud of and I thought I’d pass it your way. Our entryway started out with old white faux marble tile floors, metallic floral wallpaper, and a cheap outdated light fixture.

Jenna Sue Before

We ended up replacing the floor with travertine-style porcelain tile, DIYing board and batten with coat hooks, adding a fresh coat of paint, and a new rustic light fixture.

Jenna Sue Interim

I designed some art for the space and voila!

Jenn Sue After

We love the open feeling you get when you walk into the house now, it’s such a breath of fresh air.

Thanks for looking, and I can’t wait to see how your kitchen turns out (we’re adding open shelving in ours soon too, can’t wait!) -Jenna Sue

You can read more about the processand see extra photos of the foyer-y goodness here on her blog. And if you’re pining over some of her art, she’s got a shop where you can snag your own. Thanks so much for sharing Jenna Sue! Let’s play the favorite-part game. Sherry loves the board and batten along with the cool industrial light and I’m into those dark coat hooks (along with the board and batten).

Great makeover! I’m wondering – do you have plans to partition off the area in front of your door to create a foyer?

I think we love things open so much that we’d rather use things like an area rug near the door to define that zone – and add art and other items to give that area some atmosphere and presence apart from the dining room. Should be fun to see where we end up for sure!

You mentioned you want to do board and battan in the hallway someday, Does this mean you’re taking down your gorgeous gallery wall? I love it so much but I know it’s your house so I’m just curious. Everything you guys do turns out beautiful.

I love this makeover! One small cheap suggestion: paint the door on the inside. When I did this my entry way became more grounded. Maybe the paint on (vs sprayed) oil rubbed bronze color by Rustoleum….all the hardware are fixtures will come together.

P.S. to S&J: I don’t know how to post a link in comments but Pier One has dinnerware on sale that would look great in your kitchen, it’s called Atlas.

I love the way this entryway turned out! All the choices were so well done, from the simple but effective travertine-style porcelain to that amazing light fixture. Plus, I adore having hooks near doors to hang things; I think that is a choice more homeowners should jump on because it is so practical. Do you know if the homeowners redid the flooring themselves or hired someone? I’m just wondering how difficult it was if they did it themselves. They did a great job!
