Making A Silver Wall Stencil That Looks Like Wallpaper

When one of our favorite paint prodigies sent over photos of her recent transformation we couldn’t wait to share them. Here’s her letter:

Hi guys! I just wanted to send you this recent project I did because I thought the colors and style screamed “Young House Love.” I came up with the pattern and design on my own- then I made a custom stencil to achieve the pattern. I was really happy with the end result (which looks like wallpaper, but with WAY less hassle!). Hope you like it! – Kristen

Here’s the room before Kristen worked her magic:

And here’s the room after Kristen’s amazing paint project:

Didn’t she do a fantastic job? We love everything from the subtle tone on tone treatment to the sophisticated and classic pattern (which Kristen designed herself). Oh and don’t forget to drop in on her amazing blog to check out a ton of other paint projects that she whips up on the regular. So inspiring! What do you guys think? Anyone itching to tackle something like this to achieve the look of wallpaper without the hassle? Do tell.

I just finished up a major studio renovation and actually ended up using some old gym locker baskets to hold my fabric bits and bobs. I love that I can still see what is in them, but it keeps everything under control.

Ikea is a must for storage. Several years ago we connected three billy bookcases together with crown moulding on the top and baseboard on the bottom. I then painted everything out brown. Looks like one custom built in!

I see the wall color is “aloof gray” but what about the stenciled part? It looks glossy. Did she add something to it? Is it a different color?

Please help! I’d love to do this over the weekend.

    Thanks,

    Jenny

i actually don’t have the name of the gray, but it was exactly 3 shades darker than “aloof gray” on the sherwin williams sample. i used a high-gloss, versus the flat look of the flat “enamel” paint. (enamel keeps it from being smudgy and you can wipe it down like an eggshell!)

Love it! I’m planning on doing something similar in my kitchen for a faux backsplash, only in a harlequin pattern. I got instructions from another DIY site and you actually use auto detailing tape (very skinny) to mark off the diamonds.

      Hey guys,

To tide everyone over in the how-did-she-make-the-stencil department, we’ll share an easy stencil DIY approach which Kristen might have relied on for her project. All you need is a thick sheet of acetate or stiff plastic (something see through is usually extra easy) and a box cutter or exacto knife to cut out the pattern (which you can sketch over and over again onto paper until you get something you love). Here’s a how-to that we dug up online: http://painting.about.com/od/stencillingdecorative/ss/stencil_cutting.htm

      Hope it helps!

I LOVE this! I tried doing something very similar when we painted striped in our guest room; however, I didn’t use high gloss for the pattern and it wasn’t shiny enough. Now that I know that it works, I’m very tempted to try it again!

What a great idea and unique too. I love that she limited it to an accent wall only as well. It is simple and classic without being overwhelming. Great find guys!!

It likes the same color but different finish! Was this a stencil? I was looking to do something similar to my bed wall, but not this creative, just a horizontal line!

I tried out this effect on an accent wall in our guest room this weekend. It was a huge success. I posted pics to my facebook page and people have been raving. I used a stencil purchased for about $10 at Michael’s and a chocolate brown wall color.

Thanks YHL for all the good tips! I also used the cut-in brush you recommended in your how-to section. It worked perfectly and saved me so much time because I didn’t have to tape. You guys are awesome!

This room is literally a work of art! I think different patterns within a room truly give the room definition. Not for this room in particular, but Echelon Home’s interlock and Cabana Strips are patterned linens that I have used in bedrooms in my house!

Again, great job on this room! Absolutely fantastic..
