When one of our favorite paint prodigies sent over photos of her recent transformation we couldn’t wait to share them. Here’s her letter:
Hi guys! I just wanted to send you this recent project I did because I thought the colors and style screamed “Young House Love.” I came up with the pattern and design on my own- then I made a custom stencil to achieve the pattern. I was really happy with the end result (which looks like wallpaper, but with WAY less hassle!). Hope you like it! – Kristen
Here’s the room before Kristen worked her magic:
And here’s the room after Kristen’s amazing paint project:
Didn’t she do a fantastic job? We love everything from the subtle tone on tone treatment to the sophisticated and classic pattern (which Kristen designed herself). Oh and don’t forget to drop in on her amazing blog to check out a ton of other paint projects that she whips up on the regular. So inspiring! What do you guys think? Anyone itching to tackle something like this to achieve the look of wallpaper without the hassle? Do tell.
Okay, I am LOVING that site! She is amazing!
Oh my gosh. It looks so… expensive. Awesome
I am uper jealous. These photos make me want to run into my bedroom and start painting.
This looks great! We just spent a “bit” of money on Candice Olson wallpaper that I put in myself but this looks as good or better for a huge price difference!
I love it! I love that greyish color. Do you know what color it is? Or perhaps Kristen will drop by and let us know…
Hey Jill,
We don’t know the color off the top of our heads, but hopefully Kristen will swing by and enlighten us all!
-John
I honestly just drooled a little on my laptop. This is amazing.
What amazing work! Love it.
Wowsa! That is gorgeous, sophisticated, very YHL!
I’d love to know how Kristen made her stencil, if she is willing to share – or a template would be awesome!
This is exactly what I plan to do in our bedroom next month – only with white on white wide stripes since a stencils seems hard to work with. I have been dreaming about an all white bedroom for years!
Beautiful! So classy and subtle.
Wowza! The stenciling immediately makes the room look even more upscale!
Wow. That’s fabulous!
This is jaw dropingly amazing. But her blog doesn’t say how she achieved this. Since this place is all about DIY, how about a tutorial? Thanks!!!
Hey Melissa,
Here’s hoping she drops in with some more details for ya!

That paint job is INCREDIBLE!!!
nice! I so want to do this to my Son’s room when he is old enough for his “big boy” room. swoon!
Wowza! The pattern and the colour are amazing!!
This is so impressive! Wallpaper can definitely be a HUGE hassle (both to put up, which I’m not sure I would ever attempt, and take down!), but it can be such a nice addition to a room.
Great job!
oh em gee. STUNNING!
Just lovely, I love the subtly of the glossy and matte finishes. That one of those small touches I wouldn’t have thought of myself, but it looks so fantastic!
Lovely! That is really inspiring me to do something similar in the dining room. Love the color too.
That is my new favorite accent/feature wall treatment. Bravo & kudos to Kristen!! (P.S. I’m impressed and I’m even an architect.)
Looks incredible! I can’t believe it’s not wallpaper! Using low VOC paint is also better for your health and the environment than your average wallpaper. As always, thanks for the inspiration.
oh, wow, this is gorgeous!
Wow, that makes the room look so much bigger, especially the height of the ceiling! Awesome job
That is beautiful!! I’ve been contemplating tone-on-tone stripes but I might have to give this a whirl instead!
Wow! It looks amazing! I, too, would love to do something like this. A tutorial would be awesome!
Gorgeous! I love the simplicity of the pattern and yet how elegant it turned out!
~Karla
Absolutely beautiful! Kristen, please stop by – a tutorial or at least just the colors used would be amazing!!
I’m so doing this! My entire house is BORING and nothing but a blank canvas screaming to be painted on. This is perfect for our bedroom.
I’m so excited!
~ Jenny
I with everyone! TUTORIAL! Please!
hey guys! the wall color is “aloof gray” by sherwin williams. it is such a nice color! i’ve actually already used it again on a few more projects around town. thanks so much for all the sweet comments, and john and sherry, thanks for the feature! :)
oh – and if i can figure out how to make a template, i will! :) i’m a little technologically challenged…i prefer paint brushes.
Thanks for dropping by with that info Kristen! We’re so glad everyone’s loving your gorgeous transformation as much as we are.

Gorgeous!
Love. It. Great job!!!
So elegant! What a great idea!
I was so close to putting up wallpaper…until I saw this. I need to do this in my room! Love it! :)
Fabulous!
Love it! Very elegant, classic, modern! Thanks for sharing, both of you!
So incredible and absolutely gorgeous!
I can’t believe someone can do that free hand. That looks amazing!
Love this, and for once, my hubby agrees! Now to just settle the debate of which wall in which room to try it on ;) A template would be AWESOME!
So pretty. I am super impressed!
my favorite reader submitted project you have ever covered! Just breath-taking.
Very impressive! Love it! I’m also loving the bed linens. Simple and elegant. Any ideas where they came from?
THIS is exactly what I’ve been needing for my guest room. Not sure if I can pull it off without a disaster but definitely going on the list. (neverending as it may be)
Where can I get my hands on that stencil?! I love it!
i love your post ,and i’ll happy to come again on your site
thanks for your share
That is gorgeous. I was looking at a similiar stencil on a website…So my question is: is the stencil design painted in the same color just a glossier paint?
Thanks for sharing!
heather – not sure where the bed linens came from, but i know the reddish pillows were from bed, bath and beyond. hope that helps a little!
How exactly did you do this? is it a different color for the stencil, what was the stencil made of, how was it applied etc. ?
Looks great!
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY JIM!
Thank you for doing all of the handy man work that I don’t know how to do and building me tons of furniture so I don’t have to break my bank!
