Reader Redesign: Get Board

When Lyzz sent along her awesome DIY chalkboard door project we couldn’t wait to share the goods. Here’s her letter:

I found your blog about 6 months ago and have been addicted ever since. I read it every single day and always find so much inspiration. I wanted to share a quick before & after that we took on. We’ve seen many homes painted with chalkboard paint and loved the look but unfortunately most of the homes in California have textured walls, so it was never going to work. Instead, I took the door connecting the house to the garage and used it as a large canvas for chalkboard opportunities. We added a chalkboard calendar by taking a little more time to measure out the appropriate size for a calendar. Since we didn’t want to use blue painters tape for the grid since it’s so wide, my car enthusiast of a husband suggested we used vehicle pin stripe tape (1/8 inch width) and it worked wonders! Two coats of paint and a couple of hours later, we got a great message board that’s perfect for our busy household. The amazing part is that the project only cost about as much as purchasing a modest size message board from the store (approximately $14 including chalkboard paint and pin stripe tape). Keep up the amazing work on your blog! – Lyzz

Isn’t that awesome? We love everything about it from the amazingly graphic and functional calendar boxes to the extra space on top and below for everything from love notes to grocery lists. Great job Lyzz! And to learn more about her awesome chalkboard DIY just drop in on her blog! Meanwhile, we’ll just be dreaming of a door to chalkboard-ify ourselves…

That is such a great use of chalkboard paint and creativity (of which I have none!) but I have really been wanting to add something like that for the kids to color on and I am inspired. I think I’m going to put ours on the side of the fridge surround in the new kitchen but I am going to model it after Lyzz’s design! Thanks so much for all the inspiring pics.

Super cute! It’s a neat idea! I hope to do this in our home once we get to that area – it’ll be a while so I’ll have to head over and enjoy Lyzz’s in the meantime. Great job Lyzz!

Oooo chalk in the baby’s room would be fun. While the baby is an infant you could use it to keep track of feedings, changings, shopping lists, etc. But as the bambino gets older he/she could use it to color on (and be deferred from coloring on your crisp white walls).

Great idea! And the pinstripe tape was genius!! I have a feeling I’ll find uses for that all over the place.

We did this to our pantry door this summer and we love it! We get lots of compliments on it too! We didn’t include the calendar but we have a spot for a grocery list and a “What’s for dinner?” section so I don’t have to answer that question 600 times a day. There’s also plenty of space on the bottom for the kids to draw. When we did the pantry door I also painted the side of the kids bookshelf in their playroom so they could color in there too. I love chalkboard paint!

That door is great, and the tape was a genius idea. I have an old frame that is way too fancy for me, so I’m going to paint the frame white and insert a DIY chalkboard and hang it in the dining room. Bon Appetit!

Love it! Our backdoor is scheduled for a makeover too, with magnetic paint and then a coat of wipe-off board paint. I think the calendar was inspired work!

I just made some chalkboards out of some frames that had been tossed in the garage for years by my fiance’s mother. Now I have one to use as a “menu” for the dining room and another to use for whatever I want.

I posted about them here: http://bearandhoney.net/2009/12/10/could-it-be-a-craft-project/

and the finished board here: http://bearandhoney.net/2009/12/28/chalkboards-finished/

    Great project!

I wish there were such a thing as “dry erase board paint”–I like the idea of a chalkboard, but CANNOT STAND the feeling of holding chalk or the sound that it makes, so I’m sure I’d never use it!

Love the idea, with 4 kids and a busy family schedule, I was tempted to buy this old chalkboard from a thrift store to hang on my dining room. Thankfully, I found this article.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. This little door had served us so well since we put it in place, from putting up menus to announcements to simple reminders as we head out the door.

It’s also possible to make your own chalkboard paint in any color. Use regular wall paint (flat latex) and add unsanded tile grout. I haven’t tried it myself, but read about it after I’d already bought the paint and painted my own chalkboard. I believe it’s 1 cup paint to 2 tbsp grout, but don’t take my word for it; search the Internet.
