Young House Love » Our Second House » Decorative Bedroom Pillows

Decorative Bedroom Pillows

We promised a post about the project that kept us busy yesterday, so we’ll be sharing that as soon as we can get the pics uploaded and sized (we had to wait until this morning to shoot afters in the daylight). Until then, here’s another pillow post (notice a theme lately?) that we’ve owed you for the past week.

We mentioned during our failed shower curtain attempt that our trip to HomeGoods wasn’t entirely fruitless. But we just realized we never elaborated about the, er, fruit. So here we go: we found this bold pair of greeny-gold pillows that practically screamed “I want to date your duvet.” So we introduced them:

Pillows Straight On

They were just $24 for the pair (12 bucks a pop), and we thought they’d complement our bedding perfectly – especially with that subtle lattice pattern and the shiny fabric to add some texture and interest. And we like the idea of a white pillow in front of them for contrast, so we’re thinking we’ll try to hunt down something similar to the ruffled pillow in the West Elm picture below on the cheap from TJ Maxx or World Market instead. Or maybe we’ll just go crazy and pick up a bright randomly colored pillow (eggplant? navy?) and work it in with art and other accessories that’ll be introduced to the room as we go. For now our white Paris pillow above works as a placeholder of sorts. No rush.

West Elm Bedding1

We’re enjoying the extra dose of color among our formerly-all-white pillow collection on the new bed. And that “we” includes Clara (who likes to play hide and seek behind them)…

BedPillows Clara Face

…and her big brother (who likes to go crazy in general, on and around them). Watch his antics below or over here on YouTube:

Ah dogs and pillows. Gotta love them.

Beefier post to come when we’re done uploading and sizing pics!

HAHA! i love the dog video! my parents just so happen to have a lovely little blond boy chihuahua who loves to go crazy like that and then burrow into the pillows and sleep for hours on end. i call him the “prairie dog” because he’s forever burrowing into blankets, pillows, pretty much anything to stay warm. so cute!

i love the french pillow, i’ve had a tutorial saved on making a tea towel that looks similar, now i know just what to do with it!

I bought those same pillows a few weeks ago (i actually have that duvet too, totally copied you because i couldn’t pass up a deal like that!!). They were only 19.99 at Marshall’s though! I notice that they have a lot of the same exact things at those two stores, but homegoods is usually about 10% more expensive.

I also got 3 large european pillows to add height to the back of the bed in the same trip – they are white with stitching to add texture. I couldn’t believe it because they’re large down pillows that included a removable sham for only 19.99! A european sham alone can cost $60 – not even including the insert. Yay!

Every time we try to sweater him (yes that’s a verb) he goes crazier than he did in that video. He literally writhes on the floor until he wiggles out of whatever item of clothing we’ve added to his wardrobe. Which kinda put an end to that pretty quickly. He just shivers all the time (when he’s hungry, excited, happy, bored, tired, mad, etc- it’s his default move). We hear it’s a chihuahua thing.

Ok, I have to ask about how you keep the bed clean with Burger doing all of his romping and burrowing up there. We have two very short-haired cats that have similar bedroom habits, and I can’t help but feel that the bed is a little less than clean when I lay my head on my pillow at night. Any secrets to not feeling like your bed is one giant pet bed? Obviously there’s no breaking our cats or your Burger of the cosleeping at this point!

      Hey Erin,

Burger’s a pretty clean little guy (he grooms himself like a cat and doesn’t shed much) so I guess we just don’t have an issue with hair or any sort of pet odor (Burger smells better than the baby, seriously, he’s so clean) so it doesn’t bother us. You might want to put your pillows up on a shelf in your closet or something each day if you think it would feel like they’re fresher each night? I dunno. Might be a crazy idea. Anyone else have suggestions?

This may be a little weird but since my dog generally just sleeps in my bed when I’m not in it I’ve gotten in the habit of switching out my nice pillows for some older ones when I leave for work. That way my puppy doesn’t have to feel deprived of the entire human bed expirience and I don’t have to smell puppy breath on my nice clean pillows.

That ruffly West Elm pillow reminds me of one I bought for our living room. Instead of ruffles it has a raised velvety pattern, and coming from IKEA it was definitely more budget friendly! Shoot, couldn’t find it at their site… discontinued?

Here’s one I found when I went looking for the one we have in our house; it’s a little more structured/symmetrical than ours, but still pretty sweet for the price:

So I totally love those pillows, and this is kind of a weird question, but do you guys take them off every night to sleep? They look a little too nice (and also likely to leave funktastic creases all over your face)! I know you have that nice armchair on the other end of the room that you could throw ’em into, but it still feels like kind of a repetitive effort every day for pure decor, but I might be missing some functionality, or making too much of a quick toss!

And can I comment without noting how incredibly adorable Clara looks in this picture? No way, jose. She’s so sweet and happy, y’all should be really proud.

We just toss them onto the chair just as you guessed. We’ve been doing that with a few bed pillows for the last 4+ years (we always like a few pops of fun color or pattern there, even if we don’t sleep on them) so it’s second nature at this point.

He isn’t really too scared most of the time (he generally loves people and babies and even kids, just not other dogs for the most part) but he definitely runs up to people and shakes with excitement! Chihuahuas seem to shake when they’re scared, happy, hungry, tired, excited, angry, etc. It’s like his default move. Haha.

As for Clara and casting calls, working in advertising on Johnson’s Baby stuff in NYC (where John and I met) we don’t really want that life for Clara (it’s hard work for those cute little babes, we used to film commercials with them and it was a lot) but we’re glad you think she’s as cute as we do! I hope you don’t mind the question, but my sister and I are from Germany and absolute fans of your blog. We’ve both been trying to figure out the American bed system and didn’t get anywhere. You’ll probably laugh out loud, but I’m serious. On a German bed you’ll find a blanket, a pillow (or two if it’s a double), a sheet and that’s it. What else do you need for sleeping… So my sis and I have wondered:
    1. Why are there so many cushions on American beds and
    2. Where do they go at night? Are the beds so long that you sleep at their feet, so to say, or do you take all but one or two per person out?
    3. What did you clip to the mattress in one of your previous posts and
    4. How do you sleep under it if you clip the duvet (?) to the mattress
    5. Actually, what do you sleep under? The duvet and the throw (I mean the nice-looking every day the same quilt or throw thingy), just the throw? A throw and a sheet? Just the duvet (and take off the throw?
    6. Can you believe that one can have so many questions about bedding?

Never mind if you think these questions are silly, but we read some US decorating blogs and were really flabberghasted… Wouldn’t mind a short comment or even a blog post if you have the time (We know you’re super busy atm).
Thanks for so much decorating awesomeness,

    Yours

      Hey Charlotte,

1 & 2. There are usually four pillows for sleeping along with a few accent pillows (like the ones we got) which get placed on a chair or bench for the night. We just like them for color and fun. Kind of like how you make the bed for looks even if you’ll just sleep in it again that night. It’s second nature to toss them on the chair at night and make the bed and toss them back on in the morning.

      3. Many people tie or clip the comforter inside their duvet cover to keep it from slipping around. Since it’s a large insert in a large pillow-case-like fabric duvet, holding the corners in place keeps it from getting all bunched up inside.

      4. It’s not clipped to the mattress, the comforter is just clipped within the duvet cover. This one did give us a chuckle. Love it!

      5. We sleep under a sheet and a duvet cover (which has a comforter inside). That way it’s easy to wash the sheet, since that’s the thing that touches your body. And occasionally you can wash the duvet without having to wash the comforter (which is big and bulky). Although you can wash that too from time to time to keep it fresh, maybe once a season.

      6. It’s awesome. We love hearing about how other people in other parts of the world do things! Your blanket and sheet and pillow method sounds fabulously simple and clean.

Thanks a lot! Now we get it… Almost… I’m slow… So you take the day throw/quilt thingy off the bed at night? So for layers it would be mattress-sheet-person-sheet-duvet cover layer 1-comforter-duvet cover layer 2? Yes, I can make it really complicated but I am jumping at the chance of finally having ALL my bedding questions answered for now until eternity…
Oh, and just for clarification, with blanket I meant a comforter in that pillowcase-thingy thing thing… Too many words… Throw, duvet, blanket and I hadn’t really heard comforter before but now I know what you mean. Thanks a million. One happy English teacher here.

Looks great! Are all four white pillows in the back standard sized or are some euro? And while I’m snooping…if they are all standard, do you put regular pillowcases on the two you sleep on and shams on the two you don’t or what?

I bet it’s funny for you that we all have so many questions about these things. Thanks for being sports and spilling the details!

I bought two euro as “decorative” pillows but haven’t found a simple sham that I like for them and am thinking standard size might have been easier.
