Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I scored an old hutch (kinda like a dresser?) once in college. I was looking for something to put pretty dishes on in my cramped college apartment and went to a local “trendy” store. Of course they were all way too much $$. But then I saw an old hutch that the store had used for displays (think candles and other fun stuff) in a back room. It was missing a door (which was fine with me–open shelving!) and I asked the store owner about it. She was going to purge it! Scored it for $25. It was a steal! Good bones for sure!
Love you guys and love your blog!

After years of grad school living off sad thrift items, we have since furnished nearly our entire house with fabulous finds off Craigslist. Since we have four little kids, it makes me much calmer knowing that we didn’t pay retail when one of the kids dings something, etc.

A rocking horse my dad made when I was pregnant with my oldest (now 10). Growing up I always wanted a rocking horse and he finally made one for my kids…it is beautiful and all four have used it over the years and still do! It looks great in my entryway, even realtors think it adds the perfect touch ;)

When I was just out of college I bought a vintage dining table and chairs, very ornately carved table base with an octagonal top, and high back chairs with floral motif. They appear to be handmade, possibly one-of-kind. Oh, and they were yellow. I’ve since reupholstered the chairs twice, once in a sunflower print (it was the early 90’s!) And more recently I painted the table glossy white and redid the chairs again. I get compliments on the set all the time and will never part with it!

It is a toss up between my 1920s dresser (complete with HUGE mirror) that I’ve had since I was a baby OR my 1940s waterfall vanity OR my 1950s starburst dinette set (with chairs) that I scored for $60!

FURNISH ME – my fav piece of furniture is a granite dinning table that my father got from a client in exchange for his tie! It is a light color grayish brown granite, and it is solid granite including the legs and top. I have had it for almost 10 years now and it makes a great neutral table for any color scheme I have done

Furnish me! The current greatest piece I own is the cradle my husband’s grandfather build for his first grandchild. It was most recently used by my first grandson and refinished for him personally by his 83 year old great-grandmother! She’s one spunky Brit! :)
