Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece is an olive green, Danish modern-style chair that my parents got for their wedding. They were slightly
horrified at my love for it, and graciously let me have it.
Now all my friends love my “Mad Men” chair (and so do I!)

my favorite piece right now is a dresser and two mirrors i scored at a thrift store for $18. it had good bones but the drawers were thrown in so i thought they were broken and needed some work. turns out they were just in the wrong slots. dresser was perfectly good just needed a coat of paint. i sold one mirror for $15 making back most of my investment, painted that beauty turquoise and placed her by the front door. love!

I found this AMAZING old buffet on craiglist for pennies. My husband and I painted it a matte black and took out one of the drawers and made it into out entertainment stand. The piece has so many curves and details and our place is modern so the contrast is really beatiful!!

I love my current living room table…it’s an old drum that used to be in my grandmother’s closed-in patio and it reminds me of a time when things were simpler and the biggest decision was “what pie should we make today?” (always loved visiting their house! :) Unfort. it’s seen better days, but I do hope to keep this piece of memorabilia in the family for however long it lasts :) (too bad my bf doesn’t agree…)

From a practicality standpoint, we’re loving the overstuffed chair we bought for our 21-mo-old’s room so we could move the glider to the baby’s room. He LOVES flopping into it to read or play and Mama will appreciate having the glider in baby girl’s room when she arrives next week.

I inherited the dresser my grandparents bought when they were married and then hauled across the country to Oregon. It is cherry wood, in BEAUTIFUL condition 70 years later, and I feel connected to them every time I open the drawers or clean the mirror.
Thanks for the chance to win!

FURNISH ME! My kitchen table and chairs that came from my parent’s drug store when drug store’s used to have soda fountains. I love the history behind them and the fact that my parents met at the store when my mom would come in to buy a cherry coke from the cute pharmacist.

My new husband and I collected a bunch of random pieces from relatives to start our lives together. My favorite piece is my dad’s old dresser that he used as a kid in the 60s. It’s small enough for our 700 sq. ft. apartment but it really makes a statement with its mid century design and drawer pulls. I think I’ll have it forever!

A couple years ago I found a Plycraft Eames-style lounge chair and ottoman on Craigslist. The family was asking $50 and I offered them $60. Despite their offers of up to $500 for the pieces, they told me that since they told me I was the winner because I was the first to offer more than they wanted (and they said I was polite). Talk about nice people!

Furnish me! We sadly don’t own anything vintage or antiquey, but I’d love to change that. I think my favorite thing is secretly our kitchen table – it’s just from JC Penney but I got an amazing deal on it AND I assembled the whole thing myself, even the super-heavy top, because I was too impatient to wait for my husband to get home.

Our greatest piece is an antique wooden card catalog. It was something I always wanted but a) hard to find and b) expensive.
Then out of the blue I discovered one on craigslist in a nearby small town. $200 and a short trip later we had it home! It generates lots of comments and is extremely handy for storing everything from dog collars and treats to aluminum foil and kitchen accessories.

My favorite pieces are a mid-century Heywood Wakefield Buffet we got at a Goodwill for $20.00 and an antique mirror I found curbside. That mirror goes perfect over the 15.00 pineapple foot-board we found at scratch and dent sale that we mounted as a headboard.
Harmony says
Furnish me! I honestly don’t own any awesome pieces of furniture! As a first time home owner, we still have all of our hand-me-down furniture. I have, however, painted some of it so that its mighty perdy, like my headboard… so I won’t complain about my $15 wonder!!

While 95% of my household furnishings are hand-me-downs or craigslist finds, my most favorite piece I own is my grandmother’s antique long dresser (which before that, was bought by and belonged to her rich, well dressed sister!) It has enormous space and a huge, beautiful mirror on top. You can’t find fine details like it anymore and is made of solid wood. A masterpiece.

I found a fantastic desk for my home office on the street. It is a solid wood mission style desk and fits perfectly in my office. The nearby town was having a ridiculous day and the furniture store drug their used bargains out to the street. I just happened to walk by and fall in love.

My husband and I have this beautiful old table that we purchased from an antique shop near our home. It was labeled “pioneer table” when we bought it (who’s to say it’s from that period of time or if Ree, the Pioneer Woman, once owned something similar) but to have something in our home that has stories attached to it makes it that much better :-)
