Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name means something like, “Gift of God”, since it derives from the name, Christian. I’m not sure I’d put much stock in it, though. Sometimes I can be pretty tough to take, not at all like a holy gift. But I do love my name. Thanks, ‘rents for not going with the backup names Heidi or Gretel.

So the story goes my Mom actually had two names picked out: Kristen for a girl and Nicholas for a boy. When I was born I was named Kristen for 24 hours, and they filled out the birth certificate application, but my Mother broke down crying and begged the nurse to get it back telling her she thought I was a Kristen, but I am so clearly a Nicole and please let her change it! It goes with out saying it was one of the top 5 names that year and I graduated with 5 or 6 Nicoles from my high school in NJ, so I always daydreamed about being named Kristen….

There’s no exciting meaning to my name – I’m named after a friend of my mum – but I never got to meet her :(

My little sister’s name has a sort of meaning though – my mum refused to beleive she was pregnant until she was quite far along and called her Elizabeth – in the bible Elizabeth refused to beleive she was pregnant with her baby (who grew up to be John the Baptizer). If she was a boy, my sister would have been called Thomas. As in ‘Doubting Thomas’.

Which I have never met, by the way. On the bright side, at least my name is completely unique & random.
