Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

My parents both agreed on the name Christina but debated between whether to spell it with a “Ch” or “K”. Obviously “Ch” won out as my dad thought it looked more elegant than the “K”.

My first name is my aunt’s middle name and my middle name is my mom’s middle name. If mom had her way I would have been Dallas Andre… I have no idea how she came up with that but I’m happy dad stepped in. :)

ashley was just a name my parents liked, but my middle name anne is after my mom’s sister that passed at a young age, elizabeth ann. even neater is that all of my mom’s siblings named their first daughter after her, with the middle name either being elizabeth or ann.

FABRIC ME! And as for my name, My mom named me after Edgar Allen Poe, so my nickname would be Poe (also one of her favorite poets). When I was younger (grade school) I really didn’t like it & wished my name was something more normal — but now that I’m older, I love having such a weird name :) lol

I am named after my dad (Daniel). I was originally going to be named Elizabeth Danielle, but then my grandfather said he was going to call me Lizzie or Bethy. This freaked my mom out, so she flipped the names. It worked out pretty well considering how much like my dad I am and how well we get along :)

My mom named all three of us girls with a gemstone theme. My half-sisters are Pearlene and Opalene (their dad’s family has a tradition of all girls’ names ending with -lene such as Terrylene and Natalene, so their names actually carry two themes). My name, Sapphira, she picked because it comes from sapphire, is in the bible, and she wanted my dad and I to have to same initials (my dad’s name is Steve). Sapphira is also biblical Greek for “beautiful”. I love my name because it is so uncommon and I love knowing that my parents put so much thought into it!

MY name itself doesn’t have any significance but because I have a twin brother we have theories as to how our parents came up with Kyle and Kala rather than their first thought of Ashley and Zack! Also, my spelling is slightly different than the usual Kayla which we guess is so both of our names had the K and four letters! I LOVE my name though.

My name doesn’t have any special meaning, but any of my 3 sisters or I had been a boy, we would have been named Alexander (and gone by the nickname Sasha) in honor of the Russian side of my family. Growing up in East Texas, we were always grateful that we were girls!

FABRIC ME! I got my first name from my grandmother. The only problem is that my parents decided to call me by my middle name. That caused a lot of confusion in elementary school. I spend the first week of school always answering to my ‘first’ name and then asking the teachers to call me by my ‘real’ name.

My parents named me Meghan like every other baby girl born in 1983…j/k, but there are a lot of Meghans ( or Megan/Meagan/Meaghan) my age! They did pick this spelling because it was the Irish spelling, and my grandfather was part-Irish.

Each one of my grandmothers and great-grandmother had at least my first name or my middle name in their names (back when up to 3 to 4 names were a common thing, at least here in Germany), some even had both my names! I think it’s great that I’m named after all those strong women in my family and I’m proud to carry on my name. Although I find it quite funny that my older sister is not named after any one in my family :D

…my REAL name (which I don’t use online! :-P) was picked out by my dad from a baby book: he literally flipped through the pages, stuck his finger down, and there I was. :-) I’ve always liked my name because it’s a little unique and I was proud to have a name growing up where people would kind of do a double take when they heard it.

I will confess, however, that there was a point when I was five years old that I begged and begged and begged my mother to let me change my name to Princess Aurora (a la Sleeping Beauty). She finally relented, but told me that I would be responsible for getting myself down to the courthouse and doing all of the paperwork. My deep, abiding hatred for paperwork continues to this day. Thusly, my name remains the same.

FABRIC ME!! My dear Grandma (who has passed) use to tell me that I was named Crystal Dawn because I was born in the early morning hours as the sun was coming up and there were crystals on the trees (I was born in February so it is winter out). Of course I later learned it wasn’t true at all but I definitely cherish that story along with so many other moments with her.

If I was a boy, my 70s R&B loving dad wanted to name me Otis. My mother’s solution to this was to adopt the policy that if I was a girl, dad got to decide the first name and mom got to decide the middle name, and vice versa if I was a boy….So instead of being the boy, Otis, I am the girl, Jocelyne.

No significance to Jordan, really. But growing up it still wasn’t quite considered a unisex name and I was disappointed every year in elementary school when my desk name tag would be blue instead of pink or that I would get the boy version of the homework paper clip instead of the girl one! But now that I’m older I love my name :) thanks mom and dad!
