Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

While I like my name, I kind of wish I was called Alice. It got down to Alice (mom’s choice) or Allison (dad liked this one), so I ended up Rebecca, a name both my parents liked but was also an old family name.

No significance. My name was going to be Tracey throughout my mother’s whole pregnancy and when presented with the birth certificate, she wrote Jessica instead!

I’ve been wanting that Braemore fabric (top middle in the pic) for a WHILE now. I’d love to be able to purchase it.

MY name means victory, and I’m named after my mom’s favorite cousin.

My first name isn’t anything special, but since it was a toss up between Elizabeth and Ariel I’m really glad Elizabeth won out as I like it a lot more! My middle name “Anne” is after my only aunt on my dads side of the family, overall I’ve been content with it, my sister got the horrible family name “lien” as her middle name so I lucked out on that one! haha!

My first name is “Elizabeth;” both my parent’s had one grandmother named “Elizabeth,” so they named me after both of them! In German fashion, my parents really wanted my middle name to be “Gretchen” — but then they realized my initials would have been EGG! So they chose “Ann” instead. :)

I was named after my paternal grandmother. She died when my father was 4. I HATED my name growning up…at one point asking my father if I could change it to “Kelly”. He cried. I’ve grown to like it, but it feels strange when people call me by my full name (Lillian)…so formal!

    Thanks for the chance.

I was born in Korea and I got made fun of because of my Asian name and came home crying many times! Family got together and my Aunt suggested “Sandy!” Later on, when I got my citizenship, I gave myself a middle name of “Jenna,” one of my favorite characters from Guiding light, my favorite soap opera (don’t judge).

I love my name because Sandy means “Helper to mankind,”

FABRIC ME! My name is Kimbre (pronounced Kimbree). When my mom was pregnant with me her only sister was in college. My mom wanted to name me Kim or Kimberly and my aunt’s roommate (Kim) said, “NO!” She gave my mom a list of different forms of the name Kim and Kimbre was on the list. So there we go. I have my aunt’s roommate to thank! (Although I don’t think I’ve ever met her.) Maybe I should find her to say thanks because I really do love my name. :)

Sadly, my name has no significance at all. My mom liked the name, and it was popular in the 70s when I was born (I know this because everyone had to go by “Kelly” and their last initial in my classes). My brother was named after my father and I always wanted MY name to mean something, so when I had my kids, I made sure there was meaning to their names!

    FABRIC ME!

Lindsay means Fig Tree on an island … fairly strange! Even stranger? … how it became my name!

My mom was in labour with me for 72 hours … Sorry Mom! Big head = big brain right?!?!

It was enough time for my uncle to fly from Vancouver, BC to London, ON. I still had not made my joyous arrival so my dad and uncle decided that would be an appropriate time to visit a local pub. They return within a few hours … I am born … big headed and bald! My dad sees me and says “Let’s name her Lindsay” … as they only a boys name until this point … my mother agreed, likely tired and lacking the energy at the time to ask ‘Why?’

Several days later, my mom asked my dad where the name Lindsay had come from … My dad quickly answered ‘The waitress at the pub was Lindsay… she didn’t make us pay for the beer!’ …

My parents named me Alejandra because they wanted something “strong and feminine.” Having grown up in the south, it was often butchered (lots of silent moments during roll call at school) so I started going by the nickname Allie given to me by my older brothers friends because they said I was always hanging around them like an alley cat.
