Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

BONUS QUESTION: When my mother first held the crying-baby me, she said “Shh, its okay Barbara.” My dad said “Nope, that’s not her name.” So, I was named after my great grandmother and the name had been passed down for generations in her family. Oddly enough, they named my younger sister Barbara instead. :)

My name means “to set free” or “to liberate” in Farsi. My parents were very anti the revolution there and picked a name that showed it for me. Persian hippies if you will. I love it now bc it’s unique, hated when I was growing up bc it was different and weird and kids love to hate on that.

My great-grandfather named me. My parents couldn’t agree, and the story goes he said, “If I ever had another little girl, I would have named her Heather.” He thought it was the prettiest name ever. I never got to know him as he passed when I was just a toddler, but rumor has it we have a similar sense of humor about us. My grandmother says we would have been best friends. :)

My name was suppposed to be Caty but the portuguese registrar’s office wouldn’t accept it because the “y” is not a letter found in the portuguese alphabet (or “k” and “w”). So my mom had to change my name to Catia but everyone’s always called me Caty, which got anglophonized (real word) into Cathy when we immigrated to Canada.

FABRIC ME! My name has zero significance and was actually their second choice. My first name is (was) Barbara, but I have never went by it; I’ve always been Kate. So finally at 28 I had my name legally changed to Kate and my married name as I was having issues with the DMV over what was showing on my drivers license.

My parents picked my name because they liked it, and then gave me a non-standard spelling to ensure that I’d have to correct people for the rest of my life. I’m used to it, though, and I kind of like it. Trivia: Katharine Hepburn’s name is spelled the same way I spell mine, with two As.

Apparently even thought they didn’t know my gender in advance, my dad was sure I would be a boy. So he didn’t really pay attention to my mom’s girl name options and just agreed to her choice because he was sure they wouldn’t be using it… big surprise when I was born.

No real significance to my first name, other than it being my name, which is significant to ME… :) My middle name is Marie, and has been a family name since World War I, when my great grandpa, who was an Allied fighter pilot, was shot down over Germany and a woman named Marie found him and hid him in her barn until it was safe to get him back home. When he left he told her that all the women in his family would be named after her, and we are!! Makes picking out a middle name for my daughter easy! :)

FABRIC ME! I think that my name, Alicia, means “Noble.” I’m not sure about that. Haha. And I have no idea why my parents decided to give me the name, other than that they liked how it started and ended with a vowel (so more pleasing to say and less harsh on the ears) and they knew I’d probably be the only Alicia in my class, because while it’s a known name, it’s not overly common.

Fabric Me!!! My name was inspired by Jamie Lee Curtis who was very popular when I was born (which explains why there were always a minimum of 4 in class at school). Of course, my mom tried to be original by spelling it wrong which has left me with a lifetime of correcting people and never finding my name on a key chain. I always wished it was more elegant like Elizabeth or Charlotte.
