Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My dad’s mom’s name was Marjorie, and he kind of wanted to name me after his mother…who swore she would never talk to him again if he saddled her granddaughter with a name like Marge. Marjorie is an old English diminutive of Mary, so that’s what they picked. THANK YOU GRANDMA.

I’m named after a girl my parents met at a BBQ when my mom was pregnant. They aren’t sure who she was, but they liked her. After not running into her again after a few months they figured she wasn’t in their inner circle of friends so it was fair game. Yep, 33 years later they never saw her again. Guess she was a great women to make such a lasting impression.

Needless to say, my father was too excited about the true origim

Don’t think I’v ever really asked how I got my name, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve really come to like it. When I was younger, there was always another Kelly in my class (and I still work with two other Kellys), but it’s mine now. And I like that I don’t have a name with all sorts of obvious nicknames like Joseph-Joe-Joey or something.

My parents thought I was going to be a boy, so they only had the name James picked out after my father(which, oddly, is my husband’s name). It would have been a cool girl name, but my mom thought I needed something more feminine. She was a nurse in the labor/delivery ward and she asked her fellow nurses for suggestions. One of them, a Jewish nurse, suggested an old testament blessing to the morning. My hippie mom loved it, so that’s how I was named.

My name is so unusual that I’m the only person who pops up when you google the name (which is why I’m not writing it here). It’s a very feminine version of L’Chiam, which is a Jewish blessing/salute/celebratory exclamation. I have spent many many years explaining that I’m not Jewish and having sweet old ladies speak Yiddish to me and pinch my cheeks. :)

My parents just liked my first name, but my middle name (Morgan) was a family name. I think it’s funny because when I was little Whitney Houston was big and people would always ask if I was named after her. It always made my mom mad because she didn’t even know who Whitney Houston was in 1986 and hates that I’m associated with someone she didn’t even know existed.
