Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My first and middle names, Erin and Elizabeth, came from two of the daughters on the old television show The Walton’s. My parents just couldn’t decide on a name for me until my mom suggested it one evening in front of the T.V.

    FABRIC ME!!!

There is no meaning behind my name, but my mother called town hall to ask how long she had to make a name change on the birth certificate everyday for two weeks after I came home from the hospital. Everyday during those two weeks when my dad came home from work he would find my mother in tears, fretting over her name choice. She made the right decision not to change it though, I really don’t like the alternative as much.

Fabric Me! My name means, “Lily” which is what I would change my name to if I made a change! Lilies seem sweet and demure, but they always make a BIG splash! I was named after a neighbor/ friend of my parents. My maiden name began with a Q, so I was Susie Q and loved it!

FABRIC ME! No special story behind my name, my parents just liked it. My middle name was for my great-grandmother, who passed before I was born, but when I got married I dropped it and now I use my maiden name as my middle name. For my son, we chose names using the first letters of his grandfathers’ first names (N and F), since both are gone. The “N” for my father Norman was easy (we both liked Nolan) but we were stuck on the “F” since my husband’s father was Fred. Then my husband suggested Fisher — he liked it, and I loved it as it was my paternal grandmother’s maiden name.

FABRIC ME! Oh please do, I am in desperate need of curtains.

Oh, and as far as my name goes – my dad’s name is Stephen, my mothers name is Sandra. They wanted to stick with an S but couldn’t agree on anything except Stephanie. Then my brother came along and the disagreement commenced and ended with my brother being named Stephen. We’re still not sure if my father was paying intentional or accidental homage to George Foreman by naming the two of us with his own name.

My first name is supposed to mean worthy of love. My middle name is a family name shared by lots of women in my family. My initials are AJ and my dad is a HUGE racing fan so he likes to claim he named me after famed Indy Car driver AJ Foyt. I like that story but know my mom didn’t give him that much power. :)

I got the name Izzy because when my little sister was learning how to talk she couldn’t pronounce Elizabeth so she just said “Izzybeth”. Needless to say, it stuck!

My amusing name was picked because a Dr Kelly did my mom’s fertility treatments and they had tried to get pregnant for 9 years.

He did not, however, enjoy her telling everyone “this is the man who got me pregnant!”

He insisted on correcting her with “your husband got you pregnant, I just did your treatments!”

The 80s were a fun time for misunderstandings ;)

Also my name means warrior woman which is soooo true to my personality!

Fabric me! So, here’s the funny thing about my name: my parents didn’t actually give it to me. See, I was born as “Hannah” but when I was 18, I changed it to “Chana” (which is still pronounced the same, just so you know!). I’m Jewish, and had been looking for awhile to find a different spelling (“Hannah” just didn’t really do it for me, you know?) and while watching Schindler’s List that summer, I saw that there was a Jewish woman in the movie: named “Chana”. The next day I announced that I was going by that, and since then, it’s been legally changed and accepted by everyone! (well, almost everyone).

I hated growing up that my name, Charlotte, in all the baby name books says “The Feminine form of Charles” …. how boring.

My parents chose it because 1 – Mum boarded with a lovely lady called Charlotte when she was just out of dental nurse school and 2 – because she was a school dental nurse she had so many names that reminded her of snotty nosed kids that she had treated … luckily she’d never had a Charlotte to put her off the name
