Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! Oh, my name. My mom used to work at a bank and I was named after a woman who came through the drive through window. Yep. So sentimental, right? haha. :)

I’m the third girl in my family. I’m told my parents heard the name on Sesame Street and liked it. Not sure if that’s where they got the spelling too, but it seems to be a rarer version.

My name is Jessica, which in Hebrew means wealthy.

My mother wanted to name me Sarah. My dad liked Jessica. I guess she let him pick. I always wished I had a more unique name growing up, there were too many other Jessicas in my school. Now, though, as an adult, and as a “yankee” transplanted to the south, I rarely meet another Jessica. Where have they all gone to?!

    FABRIC ME!

My mom picked my name (dad wanted Megan, apparently; he eventually named the dog Megan). I hated my name as a kid because no one could pronounce it when they read it for the first time. Many teachers were surprised to see a little girl raise her hand on the first day of school in response to “Bryan” during that first roll call. BUT, now I love the uniqueness of it.

FABRIC ME! My dad is from Ireland, so you know it was going to go in that direction. Shannon or Heather were the top 2 options, and Shannon won out. Then when I was 5, we went to Ireland to visit family and flew into Shannon Airport, drove through the town, over the river and so forth. Since I’d just learned how to spell my name, I decided that “Everyone there really liked me” :) and told everyone I met there.

And my name doesn’t have any special significance other than all my siblings’ names end with the “y” sound. Amy, Becky (Rebecca), Andy (Andrew), Heidi, Lindy, Rusty (Russel), Katie, Holly, and Emily. Yup, you read that correctly. I have 9 older siblings. :) Thanks again for the giveaway!

My parents picked out good Irish Catholic names for me and my two siblings. Also it was the 80s and Katie just happened to be a popular name. I’m cool with it, although I flirted with the more serious ‘Katherine’ through middle and high school when I thought I needed to have a more grown-up sounding name.
