Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name (Christina) means “christian.” I do remember that I wanted to change my name to “stephanie” when I was in third grade. Thankfully, I have grown to love my name and the meaning behind it.

    FABRIC ME!!!

My name is a biblical city, the city of Bethany (not to be confused with the biblical city of Bethlehem.) I like my name a lot… however, I will say that when ordering take-out, I pretend my name is Stephanie because for years EVERY place would mistakenly think I said Stephanie instead of Bethany and it became too confusing when I would go pick up the food. So, now I just give my name as Stephanie.

My name is Rachel, probably because my older sister is Rebecca. Luckily our lives & relationship do not in any way mirror the lives of the biblical sisters, Rachel & Rebecca.

FABRIC ME! No special reason for my name. My parents thought it was a pretty name and unusual. Oddly enough, it was a very uncommon name at the time. I guess quite a few other parents discovered the same name in the 80s.

My dad heard my name at a graduation, but the spelling was really different. He and my mom decided to spell my name like “Asia with a K,” since they’d both lived for several years in Asia (Singapore) and it was actually where they met. “It’s like Asia, but with a K,” is still how I explain the pronunciation to people.

The hobby-genealogists in my family claim that before our last name was Americanized, it meant “last house at the end of the village.” I have not bothered to verify this because it’s weird and fun and quirky, so I just choose to believe it is true. And that possibly my ancestors were anti-social people.

    FABRIC ME!
My name is Gwenalyn because my parents didn’t like the “o” or “d” sound that came with Gwenolyn or Gwendolyn (which means fair). When I was a kid I hated my name because people called me Glen and Owen and Gwendolyn. I always told them there’s no “duh” in my name. However, as I got older I was better able to handle all the comments that came along with my name. There was a time when I worked at a concession stand in a movie theatre when a customer mockingly asked, “Hey Guinevere, where’s Arthur?” I responded with, “He’s my manager and he’s upstairs. Would you like me to call him down for you to meet him?” That was super fun for me. Now I love my name because it’s unique but not weird, and when my daughter was born on my birthday it was easy to give her a piece of me (the “lyn” from my name) without taking away her identity. :)

I’m not sure exactly why they picked my name (Deborah) but I know that they wanted to go with a biblical name. I used to hate it because it was considered an ‘older person’ name when I was younger but now I like being one of the few people my age with it! However the nicknames associated with my name sucked (anything Little Debbie snack cake related… yeah…)
