Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

My name is Jennifer, like so many others born in the 70s. My mom wanted to name me Harmony, but my dad vetoed. I often wonder how my life might have been different with a different name…

    FABRIC ME!

When my mom was eight years old, she was visiting someone and met a First Nations family who had a daughter named Shanoah. She asked what it meant and when she was told “little white dove,” she decided then and there that when she had a daughter, her name would be Shanoah.

My dad named my two younger sisters.

Fabric Me! I’m named after my grandmother. My parents actually called me Mary Frances, but I dropped the double name when I was old enough! I used to send out two versions of my Christmas card- one to people who know me as Mary Frances and one to people who call me Mary!

    FABRIC ME!

My name (Leila, pronounced lee-la; yes like in Futurama) doesn’t have special significance to the family; my mom picked it because she had a co-worker once with the name and she thought it sounded pretty. It’s an Arabic name that means “dark flower.” I had mixed feelings about it as a kid – I hated it on one hand because, hey, nobody could spell it or pronounce it, but I liked it because I put on very dark-and-mysterious airs as an adolescent so to have a name that meant “dark flower” was pretty cool. Now I can’t imagine not having it. I’m a scorpio. We like being unique ;).

My parents told me that they were going to name me Zoe, and that my grandmother pushed for Alma which was her mother’s name, but of the three, I’m glad they picked Leila.

My middle name (Ann) is my mother’s name.

My mum wanted to call me Fleur, but then discovered that was the name of a French ‘feminine product’ :s eventually they settled on Alexandra – but when I was brought home from the hospital my brother had a tantrum and yelled “Another sister!? I wanted a brother called Elizabeth!!” And that is how I got my middle name.
