Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! My name Leona means lion. I was born in July, so my zodiac sign is Leo,too! My parents didn’t pick it because of that though… They wanted a name that sounds good, is short (I have a long last name) and that nobody has! I LOVE my first name because it is so rare around here in Germany.

I was named after Jackie Onassis-Kennedy because of her style & grace. My parents had hoped I would turn out that way, they got the style part right but the grace…not my strong suit.

FABRIC ME! My name is Laura which refers to the laurel tree which in turn is related to victory. I like Laura now but didn’t always – in German class I picked Klara as my name and my best friend was Ilse. My mom is German so one of the front runners when she was pregnant was Mercedes and for some reason my parents really liked Sashiko because it means joy or something. Thank goodness they passed on that or I would have been Sashiko Sweterlitsch!

My dad wanted to name his next son Joe, my mom didn’t like it, so she named me Jo Lyn. She thought they would call me Jo like in Little Women. Only a few people call me that. It wasn’t okay for a boy, but it was okay for a girl?!

…no special meaning other than using it as a device to torture me my entire life by being spelled weird. Parents today think they are being so fun and creative by spelling their childrens’ names in unusual ways, but… uh… no.

FABRIC ME! Erin means Ireland and though our family is Irish, my mom picked it because it was a name that wouldn’t have any nicknames associated with it. She’s always preferred to be called Rebecca instead of Becky and she wanted to ensure that my actual name stayed that way.

My parents named me after Jessica Lange..In 1985 it wasn’t as common of a name. Now it’s in the top 10 of names in the 1990’s! At least my middle name isn’t common – Selie, which was my great great grandma’s name. I love it!

    FABRIC ME! PLEASE!

My dad chose my name just because he liked it. This drove me crazy when I was about 8–that my name wasn’t a family one, and didn’t have any special meaning. One day I sat down with the dictionary (which had given names in the back) and chose a name with Meaning. When I was 18, I decided, I would change my name to Dagmar. Of course I didn’t; I can’t even remember what Dagmar means.

    Fabric Me!!!

I am named after someone, but we’re not related, nor did anyone in my family ever meet her. My Dad is a stone cutter. The majority of his work is in making gravestones. My mom was out in the cemetery with him while he worked one day and found the inspiration for my name, Molly Rebecca, on a gravestone. Some consider this a spooky tale, but I kind of grew up in cemeteries so they’re not at all scary to me. I learned how to ride a bike in one. :)

FABRIC ME! I was a week old before my parents could agree on a name. My dad wanted to name me Wilhemina Ann. My initials would have been WAG signifying I was the tail end – the last – of the kids they planned to have. Fortunately, my mom vetoed that name. They finally agreed on Ruth. I’m glad I am not a Willie, and my younger sister actually ended up being the finale of the family!

FABRIC ME! because I’m named after an alcoholic main character in possibly the most depressing movie ever, Days of Wine and Roses. My mom was 9 months pregnant when she saw it, and they didn’t have a baby name picked out. She loved Lee Remick’s character’s name: Kirsten (pronounced KEER-sten).

    (Please!)

My parents named me Jennifer Elizabeth, solely because they liked how it sounded. It is very pretty but unbelievably common. Seriously, Elizabeth is the third most popular name of the last 100 years and Jennifer is the fourth. There were always at least three other Jennifers in my class. Now that I’m pregnant, my husband are consciously choosing a name that won’t doom our baby to the same fate!
