Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I don’t remember what Keri means, but I do know that my parents decided on this less common spelling because the Stephen King movie “Carrie” came out the year I was born, and they didn’t want my name associated with a horror flick.

I used to have a bookmark that had my name “Elizabeth” and the meaning “Consecrated to God” — only reason I know that! Ha! I’ve always liked it, but as a kid, about once a year, I picked a new nickname to go by…Liz, Beth, Libby, Lizard (yes, seriously)…My husband’s mother picked ONE name that could go boy/girl each time…so my hubby is Page (no “i” – apparently that’s the girl spelling!) and his sister is Blake.

My name is the feminine of Abraham, and depending on the translation, it means “Earth Mother” or “Mother of the Nations”. My parents were kind of hippies and I turned into an ecologist, so I guess it worked.

Nothing exciting about how my name was picked by my parents. Although, since spelled Meagan with the extra “a” after the e, people seriously pronounce it “Me-again”. Not often, but they still do.

Fabric me! My name is Greek and it means darkness, clad in black. A friend of my parents gave them the meaning of my name painted in a frame, but thought the actual meaning sounded horrible for a baby girl so she made up something else and had it framed! My parents liked the sound of my name which is why I have it (not for the meaning obviously).

FABRIC ME! This giveaway perfectly coincides with my search for fabric for the DIY table runners at our wedding reception!

My mom used the same rule for naming all five of us: one name she liked, one family name. She liked writing “Michelle” in cursive and my dad’s name is Michael, so that was their choice for my first name. My middle name is Lynn after my Aunt.

Fabric Me! My name is Sarah and I grew up with at least 4 other Sarahs in almost every class I had. Not only that, but my full name is Sarah Elizabeth and two of the Sarahs I knew as a child were also Sarah Elizabeths. Not terribly original but I can’t imagine myself as anything else.

FABRIC ME! My father was out of town when I was born so my uncle brought my mom to the hospital and stayed in the waiting room while the baby was born. (Let’s just say this was the Mad Men era — no dudes in the delivery room ever, unless it was the doctor.) My mom told him she and my dad were deciding between two girl names and asked which one he liked better. He told her Dee and that’s what I got. Ten years later he gave his own daughter the other name my parents had been considering!

I was supposed to be a Tiffany or an April, but, since I ended up being born in April, that was out. And my mom said I just didn’t look like a Tiffany.

So I’m Julie. And they unwittingly started a random tradition of matching initials for cousins (I’m JJ, so is my cousin Jen. Bro is JA, so is my cousin Josh). And there you have it.
