Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

My first name (Kelley) is my mom’s mother’s maiden name (say that 5 times fast!). While getting people to remember the extra “e” has always been a pain, I’m pretty happy to have family history behind (and one of my ancestors, Leverett Kelley, was a Medal of Honor recipient from the Civil War!)

My parents named me Lauren because they thought it was uncommon at the time (early 80’s). I graduated high school with six other Lauren’s so I guess they were wrong :)

    FABRIC ME!

So, my name is AnaMaria because my father named me after my Mother. My middle name is “de Los Angeles”, which in Spanish means “of the Angels”, because my mother is of hispanic heritage and she absolutely loves angels and thought I was heaven sent…awww. :)Funny thing is though, my parents had an agreement before I was born. If I was a boy my mother would get to name me, and if I was a girl, my father was the one who could name me. Not sure if I want to do this when my husband and I have our first child.

    “FABRIC ME!”

Like my name, Katrina, I’m Scandinavian. My dad picked my name. They were guessing I was going to be a boy, and they had the name “John Claude” picked out (yes, that cracks me up–those were my grandfather’s names). But I did end up with my mom’s first name as my middle name.

    FABRIC ME PLEASE!

This is my grandpa’s favorite story to tell. When I was born, I didn’t have a name for 3 days… my parents were stuck on what to name me since they would look at me, say a name, but nothing would stick.

They called my grandpa to check in and told him the dilemma. My grandma recalls hearing him on the phone and out of the blue he said “Annmarie, name her Annmarie” …and so they did. It stuck. They loved it. Half my name is from one relative and the other half from another.

I’ll always have a special bond with my grandpa knowing that he gave me my name.

While a lot of people always ask me if I was named after Carly Simon, I was not. Carly was the only name that my Dad would agree to. I’m not sure what the other options were. My middle name is Dyan. I’m not sure why they went with it, but my mom told me she chose to spell it the way she did because she thought the two names looked pretty written together, so Carly Dyan I am!

I’m named after the character in La Boheme. My dad’s an opera fanatic and I guess he didn’t really mind that he was naming me after the character who dies at the end. (Pretty sure that’s not a spoiler since someone always dies in an opera.)

I was named after 2 of my mom’s friends (first/middle name). Unfortunately, I have kind of a “dated” name – which is both good and bad. Good = not many Susans running around in their 20s. So I guess I’m unique? Bad = I get “oh, my mom’s name is Susan” alot. Too much.

Seriously have to say I’m SUPER excited about this giveaway. Pick me!

Emma was my Great Grandmothers name, my other Great Grandmothers middle name, and my Great Great Grandmothers name, and because both my parents loved it, it was given to me. Now for my middle name, Lee, it was after my Great Grandmother’s middle name, but she was named after Robert E. Lee, who was her Great Uncle, meaning my middle name is after Robert E. Lee (I’m not very pround of that though!)
