Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! I was “baby girl ____” for four days despite being 10 days overdue–Mom said when I was born I just didn’t look like either of the girl names she had had in mind. So I guess it was back to the baby books and she and Dad settled on Farrah. There was a Sarah and a Kara born the same week in the same hospital.

Following a tradition of my mothers family I was supposed to be named Grace but when my mom married a Kelley they didn’t want to name me Grace Kelley. My parents fought over my first name (Hurley vs Caitlin) and my dad won with Caitlin Grace Kelley.

My dad chose my name because he liked it. There were 3 other “Megan” babies in the nursery when I was born. Apparently a lot of people liked it!

FABRIC ME. I am the youngest of 10, 7 of them girls. I think by the time my parents got to me, they figured one of us had to be a “Mary”. Because my first name is two words, it’s given me problems all my life, so no, I’m not crazy about the name.

    FABRIC ME!

My mom sort-of-secretly named me after one of her favorite singers, Stevie Nicks. Thankfully she didn’t end up nicknaming me ‘Stevie’ because 1. it doesn’t fit my personality and 2. because I’m marrying someone named Steve. Awkwardness avoided!

A fun bonus is that my mom didn’t intentionally do this, but Stevie Nicks’ middle name is also Lynn (and I was ‘middle named’ Lynn after my aunt). So…Mom REALLY named me after her, haha.

My older sister was named after a family friend (for her first name) and our grandmother (for her middle name). As the second child, I was named after no one. (My dad now claims, after much family tree research, that my first and middle names are old family names. I contend that it doesn’t count because he didn’t know it when they named me).

My name (Marian May) is a combination of my parents’ names and my grandmother’s name. Marian = Maria + Iain, and May was my grandmother’s middle name.
My mom also loved medieval history, and the thoought of having a “Maid Marian” (from Robin Hood) for a daughter was quite thrilling. ;)

My mom wasn’t didn’t want that association so when the nurse came with the birth certificate she changed the name to Laura. I’m really glad she changed it, because I like Laura much better.
