Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My first name doesn’t mean anything, but my middle name (Adela) is a family name passed down 4 generations.

    FABRIC ME!

Until I was born, my parents thought they were having a boy (I want to say I was going to be named Scott), but when I arrived, surprise, I was not a boy. My mom says she wanted to name me Kirsten, but my Dad had trouble saying it, so they picked Carolyn from the paper. My middle name is from my Mom’s bestie.

My name is a type of wildflower. My mom originally wanted to name me Ashley, but thought there were too many baby Ashleys running around when she was pregnant. A friend of my parents at the time had a wife with what is now my name, and that’s where my mom drew her inspiration.

My first name is after my great-grandmother (Julia) and my middle name is the same as my mom’s. I wanted to continue the tradition with my daughter, but she’d end up sounding like a hillbilly with the first name we chose. Maybe if we have a daughter #2?

My birth name is Coy (I go by Kristy- a riff on my middle name), which is after my Grandma on my mom’s side. When I was younger, I really didn’t like the name, but have since grown to absolutely love it. I am the only grandkid named after such an incredibly special lady. It’s a real blessing, and every time I have a transaction where I sign my full name, I give her a little shout out up in heaven. Love my grams!

Fabric me! My middle name was the most important of all, and my parents picked it because of a used car salesman, haha–they just liked it and thought was kind of unisex in a cool way. Then, they picked a name from their list that went with the middle name, and I ended up Whitney Neil. I love it.

    FABRIC ME! Please!

I was born on St. Patrick’s Day in the driveway and was delivered by the local ambulance squad. My mom told my dad repeatedly that she was ready to go but he wanted to finish shaving. Needless to say, he never finished shaving and I was born before they could leave for the hospital. My parents let the ambulance squad name me and they chose Erin. It seemed appropriate given the holiday and all!

My son’s middle name is Maverick. Top Gun played on tv a lot while I was pregnant with him. I took it as a sign.

My first name is Amy. No story there.

Before I was born my mother really love the name Annette for a middle name. My father…not so much. All he could think of was Annette Funnicelo..one of the orignal Mickey Mouse Club TV show cast.

    They settled on Anne instead.

But…when I was 18 months old…the nagging regret of not naming me Annette took over. My mother decided to have my name changed (my father agreed at this point…or relented).

My orginal birth certificate has Anne crossed out with Annette typed in above it!

Two things I know about my name, one is that my parents really thought they were having another boy and dint have a girl name picked out. And they weren’t allowed to take me home without a name, so my mom and I spent three days in the hospital. Second is I have a ridiculously common name for my age, apparently there was as song named Laura. There were always at least two of us in my classes, sometimes more.

When I was very young I wished I had an easier name to pronounce/understand (I’ve gotten Tina, Lena, Christina, Zena, etc) and no one could spell it (Cena, Cina, Sina, Cna, etc). But now I love my name and how it connects me to my family.
