Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name was the only name my Mom picked out; even befor she knew the sex. I LOVE my name, and have never wished to change it.

    FABRIC ME!!!

@Ali Miller, for a while in elementary school I wanted to go by my compound first name (which no one has ever, ever called me). It was confusing for teachers and looking back, total eye-roll!

I have four names; at first it was going to be three, because my parents wanted both their last names in my name, so I’d be Laura Momsname Dadsname. Then my father’s mother died while I was in utero, so I got her name stuck on there, Anna Laura Momsname Dadsname, but I’ve only ever been called Laura (except for aforementioned highfalutin’). So when my little bro was born, my parents gave him four names too, so he wouldn’t be jealous ;) Unfortunately he has not chosen to continue the four-name insanity with his first babe, just born yesterday! I admit having four names is very confusing, I just recently had a doctor’s office demand that I give them “either my ‘real’ first name or ‘real’ middle name” — I’m like, uh, whatever works for your system?? But I also kinda like it.

My mom heard “Stephanie” in her workplace when she was pregnant with me and thought it was something she didn’t really hear a lot… well fast forward 5 years and I was one of three Stephanies in my kindergarten class! I thought if I was going to be one of so many, my name should at least be spelled “cool” and wanted it to be Stefany or something like that… now that I’m older, I’m SO thankful it’s just the good ol’ traditional Stephanie!

FABRIC ME! My dad always thought the name Nicole was pretty so when they found out I was a girl, he immediately suggested it. My mom was surprised he was so excited for a girl and had a name ready right away (she comes from 5 sisters, and he was the youngest after 4 sisters). She smiled and said ‘sounds perfect’ and never thought to brainstorm any other names for me.

My parents named me Ryan, which would be normal if I were a boy. They wanted to give me an Irish name, that at the same time would be unisex and not hinder any opportunites in my future. Not sure why they didn’t add an extra “n” or anything fancy at the end, but they didn’t!

A few kids took me at my word and said very sympathetically ” Wow, if my middle name was “Gross” I wouldn’t want to let anyone know either!”.

My name means honeybee in Greek. The story goes, before I was born, my dad wanted to name me Sarah but my mom wanted Melissa. While my mom was in labor, there was a commercial that played constantly on the t.v. for Sarah Chevrolet. They got so sick of hearing the commercial all the time that my mom’s choice won out.

My middle name is My Dad’s Middle Name and my Maternal Grandfather’s name put together. David Lynn (dad)and Allan (Al) became Lynnal! I LOVE THAT!!!! it’s pronounced Lynn- Al not Lynol as some of my friends like to joke!

Nothing special about my first name (except that Jennier was the #1 name for girls from like 1980 to 1988 – good grief). In order to try and assert a shred of individuality, I changed the spelling from Jenny to Jenni in fifth grade. It took forever for me to get that to stick and even my parents still spell it wrong on occasion to this day. :)

But my mom has a middle name that begins with D, so they wanted my middle name to begin with a D too. So, they cleverly came up with the name…drumroll, please….Dee.
