Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Both of my parents thought I was going to be a boy…and no, they didn’t have any medical confirmation of this, they just went on gut :) So when I came out a girl, they each made a list of 10 names they liked- Megan appeared on both of them, and that was it!

My first name (Sonya) means ‘wisdom’ the same way the name Sophia does. My middle name (Baigam) is the name of an old Persian queen. My last name (Seif-Naraghi) means ‘the sword of Naragh’ because my great-great-great grandfather was the sheriff of Naragh, which is a small town in Iran…

So, before I got married, I was the wise queen with a sword of Naragh. Now I’m the wise queen of a sunny mountain (husband’s last name is Sonnenberg)…

My great grandmother was named Bertha Agusta. She always hated her name, and as a child and young woman she went by Agusta, feeling that it was at least better than her first name. When she was around 40, she decided that she was fed up with having a name she hated, and decided to be called Linda, a name she loved. I proudly bear her revised name now!

my name means “industrious one”, but my parents picked it simply because they liked it. This was way before “Emily” became the number one name on the charts (I was born in 1975), so they took 3 days to decide if they wanted to take the risk of using such an unusual name. Ha! :)

My parent’s were in love with the names Brad and Lauren. So after my brother was born, the names of choice became Michael and Lauren. So that is why I’m Lauren. Unfortunately, it was a very popular name in the 80s. My sorority had five Laurens. I always suggest parents consider the popularity of the name and how the names they pick might lead to nicknames.

My parents named me Katherine, but that’s rarely used. It’s Katie to those who know me, and Kate to those who know me very well.

When I was young, I would always spell it “Kathryn”, because that’s how the other “Katie” in my class spelled her name, and quite frankly, that sounded cooler. That was until my teacher told my parents..lame.

I also remember wishing and begging my mom to change my name to Ariel, obvs after my favorite little mermaid…but I am glad they stuck with Katie. It suits me.

If I were a girl (which I am), my dad got to name me. So he named me Jennifer. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the most popular girls’ name in the 70s and 80s! :)

My mom has a very unusual name and she hated not having a ‘popular’ name, so when it came time to have kids she gave all of us one of the top 5 most popular names for the year, and since we were all born in the 80s at least one of us was bound to be Heather ;) But of course I hated having a common name growing up so all of my children have unusual names.

Growing up my mom said that she always wanted to name me Jasmine… thank goodness she didn’t. I definitely don’t think it would’ve fit my little toehead-self. My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. “Chelsea” was played by Jane Fonda. I didn’t know anyone else with my name until middle school, but no one spelled it the same as me, and it often gets mispronounced as “Chel-see-yaaa”. I will never understand why some people pronounce “sea” as “see-ya”. I didn’t like my un-common name when I was younger, but I love it now! :)

She gave me my middle name so my initials would be J.J. – thinking that people would call me that. Only a few family members did, but I still like having the initials J.J.

My hawaiian name in Nohealani which means the lovely heavens and my first is Queen. My sister also has a similar first and middle name meaning. Both of our children have and will have in the future something in common as tradition. my sister and I have sky in common and her children have the ocean in their name. Our daughter Zoe Kauiokekaimalie has sea “kai” in her name and so will our next baby!
