Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My parents had narrowed down their list of possible names, but my dad had his heart set on naming me Mercedes Belle. When I came out Mom decided that I looked more like a Lindsey than a Mercedes, and trumped him. So, not named for anybody in particular, and spelled with an E on purpose so people wouldn’t pronounce it “Lind-say”

My name is Mandy. It is not Amanda. I am named after the Barry Manilow song “Mandy” He is my mother’s favorite singer. And yes the song is about a dog. So yes, I am named after a dog.

My first name, Rachel, comes from my great-great grandmother, and it’s Biblical of course. My middle name, Katherine, is another family name – for as far back as anybody can remember, we all give our first-born daughters the middle name “Katherine,” so I share it with many great aunts, cousins, third cousins once removed… etc. I love having a name with family history!

There’s not much of a good story behind my name – other than my parents wanted to spell it the correct/original way – “Rebekah.” Nice sentiment, but when everyone’s a “Rebecca,” you never get any cool keychains with your spelling. :)

I just bought two dining room chairs from the thrift store ($5 each!!!) and would definitely use this to by fabric to recover the seats (the seats are a weird peach/tan vinyl right now.)

My name is a shortened version of my mother’s maiden name. I was supposed to be Caroline, but they changed their minds at the last minute.

FABRIC ME! The name Jane is not necessarily cool or exciting…I wasn’t named after anyone or thing…but interestingly enough I only know a one or two other gals named Jane from my child. My name means “God’s gracious gift”, but sometime in my early life I changed that to “God’s greatest gift” to annoy my three brothers!

I was named by one of my older brothers (I’m the baby of eight children…yes, let that sink in…eight), and was named after Uncle Jesse on Dukes of Hazzard. But because my mom didn’t want to name me Jessica like most girls because she didn’t want “ic” in my name, she spelled it Jessaca. Not that “ac” is so much better. I’m going to blame lack of sleep and a hard pregnancy on that one. Needless to say, have been and will always will be Jessie to my family. :)

FABRIC ME! My dad picked out my name. Apparently there was a spanish soap opera with a really kind and beautiful girl named Jessica, so he named me that. He gave me my mom’s middle name as well. Although I don’t like how common Jessica is (seriously, there were at least 3 Jessicas in all of my elementary school classes!), I love that my dad picked it (I’m a Daddy’s girl).

Oh my GOODNESS this is exciting! Okay.
So, my name is Anjali (hello!). It’s pronounced ‘Un-ja-lee’, with the emphasis on the ‘un’. It means ‘A gift to God’, which I’ve always loved. My parents chose it because, although it’s an Indian name and I’m not Indian (nor is anyone in my family), my dad grew up in India and both he and my Mum loved the name. And they loved the meaning too. I used to hate my name. People could never pronounce it properly, and it was always ‘weird’, you know? But as I grew older I got used to everyone calling me different things by not pronouncing it properly, and I didn’t really mind any more. Now I really like it, and although people still can’t say it right, I think ‘well, at least they are trying’. My dad always said I could go by my middle name, but I don’t think I’m really a ‘Claire’ person. So Anjali it is. And I like it. Thanks Ma and Pa. :)
