Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    “FABRIC ME!”

I have always wanted a name that could have a nickname. I wanted a name that could have a diminutive like my sister had or a middle name that I could go by…but I didn’t.
It wasn’t until I was older that I learned that Sally and Sadie are diminutives of Sarah and were used since Sarah was such a popular name at one time. If I would have known that when I was younger I could have had one!!!!

My older sister Kathryn wanted a little sister with a “K” name just like her. That is why my name is not Theresa (my parents’ first choice) and why it is spelled with a “K” rather than a “Ch”.

No special family meaning, my mom and dad just liked it. My dad chose the “ie” instead of the “y” in spelling Jennie, he thought it looked nicer.

    FABRIC ME!

I was named for my mom’s best friend from high school, but on the same day I was born, Hurricane Alicia hit the gulf coast and until pushed off the list by Hurricane Katrina, was listed as one of the top 10 most destructive hurricanes in our country’s history. The doctor apparently remarked upon my birth that my parents had their own “little hurricane.” Who knew how right he would be? :)

My mom had met a little girl with the name on an island she worked on with the name Whitney (my mom is music ilteriate so I am sure she didn’t know who Whitney Houston was)- she loved the little girl and her pretty blonde hair. When she looked up the name it meant “from the white island” and she decided it was perfect. When I was born I had a thick head of black hair (surprise!) but it turned white blonde pretty quickly- so the name ended up being perfect. For some reason I have always liked my sister’s name better- Brooke, but I am happy with it… I hardly ever meet people named Whitney. (And apparently my mom has a thing for names involving being near the water!)

Is is any surprise that I was born in the 1980s? My poor parents just went with what was popular, but I don’t blame them as they were EXAUSTED — I’m a twin with two older brothers, poor mom had a 4 year old, 2.5 year old, and premature twin babies. Who could expect her to get creative?!?!?!

My parents were between two names – Elizabeth and Erin. When I was born, I weighed 11 lb, 15 oz (yeah!) so they chose Elizabeth because Erin was too small of a name for such a big baby. My middle name is my mom’s maiden name. I LOVE my name and I think it’s really important to give a child a name that means something.
