Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!
My name, Whitney, is originally derived from a place meaning “white island”….Its popular use as a feminine name was initiated by actress Whitney Blake in the 60’s, and later boosted by Whitney Houston.

FABRIC ME! I was named after the book “Heidi,” which my mom loved when she was a little girl. All my relatives thought it would be very original to give me a copy for the first few years of my life. I had EVERY version! Picture book, story book, novel, abridged… I’d go through some of them with my orange crayon and “highlight” every time I saw my name… It’s pretty cute to look back on those copies. :)

I was named after a little girl that came into the bank where my mom was working. Strange.

I was supposed to be named Natalie, until my aunt told my mom she knew a Natalie that she didn’t care for and my mom HAD to change my name. So instead I was named after the song “Valerie” by Steve Winwood.

My name is Summer, but I was born in May. However…if you count back 9 months from May, you get August. Yup, must have been an interesting summer in my parents’ household back in 1980. Blushing…

The original name my parents chose for me had the initials ELM but, since my parents are rather tall, they changed my middle name to Elizabeth so that I could avoid any playground teasing about my name and height. I doubt anyone would’ve made the connection =)

My parents had 6 kids. By the time they got to the 5 & 6th I guess they ran out of imagination, energy or both.
They began to choose the middle names of their children (oldest to youngest) for the newest additions.

The 5th child was named Michael after the oldest, William Michael. I was named after my second oldest brother James Patrick (Patricia). At least it’s a unique method.

No story behind my name that I know of. But my family nickname is Andi. Whenever anyone outside of the family calls me this, it’s jarring. Maybe I associate certain voices with Andi and all the rest should be calling me Andrea?

It’s pronounced Jayleen, but it gets mispronounced a lot. Maybe I would have added a y if I got to choose but probably not because then I wouldn’t be Jalene and that’s who I am :)

FABRIC ME! My first name is after the Biblical Rebekah and my middle name was after my mother’s middle name. I did sign school papers in fifth grade as Maggie. My teacher however was not fooled. Process of elimination indicated that while Becky was in attendance, she was not submitting papers and there was no Maggie in our class.
