Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I was named after my great-great grandmother, whose name was Sarah…and we coincidentally shared birthdays (I was 22 days late).

I am named after my mom’s cousin. My middle name is the shortest name they could think of because my first and last names are both very long.

    Pretty creative, right?

My real name is ‘Gabriele’ – that’s right. You read it correctly. No typo there. ONE ‘L’! For the love…

I mean who does that?! I was the deprived child that never once got my name on a key chain or tiny little license.

Now that I’m 24, I’ve grown to like my real name and appreciate that my parents wanted to name me something unique. I’ll probably never meet another person with my name spelled like I do. It’s cool now!

My full name is Anastasia (which means Resurrection) but as a kid and teen I always went by Annie. Somewhat recently finding out I was adopted, and that Anastasia was my given name by my birth mother has given me a new found love of my full name. The fact that my parents did not change it, to me, means I am still in some way connected to my birth mother. And it leaves an air of mystery that I am okay with. Are my true roots Russian like the princess? Or German like where the name actually originates from? Anastasia Beaverhausen? Who knows!

FABRIC ME! My mom & dad picked the most unique name out of the baby book that they could find at the time. It was also the title character of a book my mom had read. With a common last name, they wanted something very uncommon to distinguish me. I’d say they did a good job!

No cool stories about my name. Although when I got married I decided to keep my maiden name instead of taking my husband’s. Sometimes I have to explain things, but I’m ultimately glad that I did it. And I gave our son my last name as a middle name to keep it alive. Gotta do something when you only have a sister :)

My parents were in high school when I was born. My initials are my parents first initials; my first name is that of my mother’s high school best friend and I share a middle name with my father: his the masculine spelling, mine the feminine. Cutsie, huh? :)

When I was born I was given the name Katie, and I had no middle name. I got used to having only two initials. When I was 23, my pops adopted me, and I changed my last name. I had planned on changing my first name to Kate, but my mom wanted me to take her middle name. I only wanted two initials, so I made Marie my second first name. So now I have two first names, no middle name, and still two initials. It confuses a lot of people, but I like it.

My first name is Emily, but my mom thought about spelling it “Emelly”– the “Em” would have been for my grandmother, Emma; the “e” for great aunt Elisabeth; the “l” for another great aunt Loreto; and the final “ly” for a third great aunt, Lydia. I’m glad she went with the traditional spelling, but I also like knowing they’re all part of my name. And my middle name is Angela, which is my grandmother on my dad’s side, who got a whole name all to herself, lol!

FABRIC ME!! I have a twin sister and my Father (who had a Twin Mom and Twin brothers who had rhyming names) insisted on my sister and I NOT HAVING names that rhymed, so my Mom wanted us to have first names that started with the same letter. She liked Leslie for my sister and came up with mine after she saw the name Melissa and decided to take off the “Me” part of it. I have the same middle name as my father (without the “e” = Jo) and my sister has the same middle name as my Mom (with an added “e” = Anne).

There actually isn’t too much of a meaning behind my name. As the story goes, my name was supposed to be Mallory – but Mallory was also the name of the town next to ours, so at the last minute my mom thought it might not be a great idea and switched it from Mallory to Kristen. I’ve liked the name ever since, but I can’t tell if it’s just a “what if” situation…
