Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!!!

My mom read the name in a Sports Illustrated magazine and really liked it! I guess the name is unisex since she read it about a man named Kerry! Ha!

FABRIC ME! The sonographer thought I was going to be a boy, so on the day of, my parents were at a loss as to what to name me. I’m named Valerie after Valerie Bertinelli because One Day at a Time was on the hospital TV and my dad agreed because he had always thought she was hot.

FABRIC ME! The timing could not be more perfect for this as I really need new curtains in my dining room but can’t afford to spend the $$.

My mom claims that she names me after a weather forecaster that she liked on the local news, but Pamela is also her sister’s name, so it’s a little odd to say that I have the same name as her sister but wasn’t named after her.

My Dad wanted to call me Thea after his aunt (wish he’d won, I really like that name!), my Mom wanted to call me Meggie (from the Thorn Birds). Instead they named me Laura – which is how my Dad’s mother’s name would sort of translate into English.

I’m named after several of my ancestors, and Elizabeth is my mother’s and grandmother’s middle, so it’s a family name. My sister and I also got family surnames as our middle names, which was embarrassing growing up when other girls had frilly middle names, but now I love it.

I actually have 4 names (or two technically since they are hyphenated) Christine-Nola Allison-Louise all of which had family meaning and also showcase my parents total inability to edit or agree on anything. In order its-
Name of aunt and name of close family friend who passed away, Grandmother, Godmother and finally second Grandmother.

Despite how long it all is when I need to fill out offical documents I wouldn’t change it….but it’s also why there was no way in heck I was hyphenating my surname when I got married. :)

I was named Michelle probably because that was the #1 name in 1976, when I was born. Otherwise, no special meaning.

Subsequently, the fabric in the bottom left corner is my bedroom curtains, and the fabric in the top middle is my kitchen curtains (well, roman blinds)… I made ’em both. Bought the fabric at (you guessed it) the Online Fabric Store.

    FABRIC ME!
    My mom kept my name
My name is conjunction of two Persian words UZ+Mina where UZ means high/up and Mina means Gem so combined to say something shines(like gem) in the sky like star or moon. My second name(not last) is Anjum which means stars(Arabic) and some times commonly used for heavenly gathering of people(like Anjuman in Urdu).
So combined meaning of first and second name is ‘Star of the Universe’ and btw it is the only known name on Internet(or in the world)so far and I can still create an id using just my first name.

FABRIC ME! My dad was very picky when it came to naming us and had several rules…the name could not be shortened into any obvious nicknames, you couldn’t be able to age us based on our names (nothing trendy), and you had to be able to tell if we were a boy or a girl based on our names. All of my siblings and I have family names for our middle names…mine is Marie for my great grandmother.
