Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name is Edithanne Marie, my first name comes from a combination of my Grandmother’s first and middle names (Edith Annie) my middle name comes from my Mother’s cousin who was killed before I was born. All of the girls in my family born after her death have the middle name Marie. I am only 33, so I am not an old timer either. It is fun to have an old fashioned name though (also the Lily Tomlin skits mean more to us)

My name itself doesn’t have any special meaning, but my parents spelled it with the F to honor their European heritage. I thought that perhaps finally when I moved to Europe, people would spell my name right… but they assume that because I’m American, I should spell it with a ph! I can’t win either way!

My dad swore up and down for the better part of 30 yrs that there was absolutely no coincidence between my name, Taysha, and my Grandmother’s cat that had fallen down the stairs and died months before my birth who was also named Taysha. Finally, around age 32 he relented and said yes it was the only alternative name he could think of when he didn’t like my mothers’ options… so yes, I am named after a clumsy dead cat.

    FABRIC ME!

My names, Sarah and Elizabeth, mean princess and God’s promise, respectively. My parents didn’t want to find out my sex, so I could’ve been Joseph.

I think God’s promise is accurate, though — my parents tried for eight years to have a baby and thought they weren’t going to. Lo and behold, they were building our house (DIYers before it was popular, lol!), and my Mom fell off the roof. They go to the hospital, and find out she’s pregnant. I was born and fifteen months later, I was a big sister!

I don’t dislike Sarah, although I think they could’ve done better — I know lots of Sarahs, most of which are also Sarah Elizabeths. In college and grad school, there were other girls who had the same full name as me, too. I love Elizabeth, though, and if I have a little girl, I want her middle name to be Elizabeth, too!

Rachel- My dad, the youngest of five boys was supposed to be a girl and was going to be named Rachel. Obviously my grandparents chose not to use it since he turned out to be a boy so my parents used the name for me.
Rachel means “little lamb” or “ewe”.

My name has absolutely zero significance. It means “victory,” but the meaning has nothing to do with why I was named that, and I’m not named after anyone. So boring, right?

I think it would be neat, however, to name my someday-daughter “Victoria Nicole” which is kind of a play off my own name. I actually met someone with that exact name once!

I don’t have an interesting story behind my first name, my last name (since getting married) is only a part of my husbands family. Anyone with that same last name in the whole world belongs to his family line. It is an Arabic last name, and since my first name is clearly not Arabic, I am the only person with my name (first and last) in the WHOLE WORLD! The one and only has a whole new meaning now, huh?!
