Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric Me!!

My real name is actually Brandon – my mom who is a pharmacist had a favorite patient and his wife’s name was Brandon. Aside for everyone thinking I’m a boy when they read my name, I like it because I’ve never met another female Brandon!

It wasn’t until I went to college that I started going by Olivia and eventually people started calling me Liv. Which is why I named my blog peoplecallmeliv!

I don’t think my name has particular significance, but I was nameless for a few days because none of the ones they’d come up with felt right. Then my dad suggested Laura out of the blue and that was that!

Also, I always used to tell people that I was named after Laura Ingalls Wilder. Loved those books.

My parents planned to call me Mandy, but the nickname wouldn’t stick. I’ve always gone by Amanda. Seems like TV shows always make the “Amandas” mean or hateful, but the name means lovable, so I like to think I’m that.
My middle name, Susan, is a spin off of my mother’s name, Sue. It’s special to me.

Yes, please, FABRIC ME! I sew like craaaazy, and would really love that prize.

My name is Anita, and there’s not a lot of meaning behind it, except that my parents wanted a very unusual name, and one that people couldn’t come up with nicknames for (a challenge that was widely embraced by my friends while I grew up).

But my last name has a cool meaning: Boeira comes from the word Boieira, which in Portuguese means the people that would herd cows, and they’d guide themselves by the brightest star in the night sky, Venus, which in Portugal (at least a long time ago), was named Boieira. See, that’s a better name story!

Nothing special to my name but we gave our daughter a very special name. My husband and I both fell in love with the same girls name at a very young age (he was 4 and I was 6 when we both heard it in different books read to us). When we found out we were having a girl it took no time to decide to name her Adelle. Her middle name is Pulelehua (meaning: BUTTERFLY) which combines my husbands family tradition of Hawaiian middle names with my mothers love of butterflies.

Oh goodness, my name. My mother wanted to name me Dorbett Rae after my grandmother’s (Doris and Betty.) My father despised Dorbett and said that he would call me by my middle name, Rae. But my mother said no because ‘Rae’ was too masculine for a first name. So, I became Laurin, with an ‘i’ because an ‘e’ was too common. I’m so glad that I am Laurin with an ‘i’ and not Dorbett.

My name Caroline was my paternal great-grandmother’s middle name. She was not a fan of it (she went by her first name Ruby) but my mom loved it. Caroline is my middle name as well but I have always gone by it. I love the name much more than my first name, so I’m glad that I go by it. I actually wanted to make Caroline my first name and adopt my maiden name as my middle when I got married, but I was told I would have to get a court order. Boo legal process!

FABRIC ME: sometimes my mom tells me I am named after Janet Leigh (Janet Lee is my first & middle) – I think she just liked it. The name books say janet means “God’s gracious gift”, which is eh – I’m not particularly religious.

As a child I hated it (thought it was an old lady’s name) – me and my girlfriend “changed” our names to Juliet & Zoe in middle
school. I forget who was who. We gave ourselves surnames like rosdale – pretending mid 90’s rock stats were our husbands.

Anyway – now I like that not many people around my age have my name. (I imagine guys named Mike or John don’t like being “big mike” or “little John” or mike d)

Fabric Me!! I’ve got a new apartment with lots of windows in my immediate future. I need to make some FABULOUS curtains!!!

The meaning behind my name is one of the best stories I have. My name is Amy, and I was named after my grandfather Walter. Doesn’t make sense does it? When my grandpa was little he had a crush on the chubby girl down the street named, you guessed it, Amy. His older brothers, started calling him Amy, and it stuck. Everyone calls him Amy, so when I’m with family, I’m Amy Lee.

If you want to be really technically about it, I’m named after the chubby girl down the street.

I was named after my great grandma Anna. In the Jewish tradition, you name a baby something starting with the same first letter as a deceased relative you’re honoring. I never really wished my name was different. It’s not too unique, although I’ve never had a class or job with another Amy, so that’s been good! :)
