Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name was pulled out of a baby book at the last minute. My parents thought I was a boy, had me all set up to be a junior, before I ruined their plans. Alas, my mom liked Nicole because it was French.

It’s a tradition in my fam that all the children have at least two middle names. Two of us have three. Between my four sisters and me, we have seventeen first and middle names!

My mother says that she always knew if she had a girl she would name her Meghan. She loved the name since childhood. It means Pearl, but I’m not sure that influenced her. She says she called me that the entire pregnancy…despite not knowing the gender. I disliked it growing up because I could never find anything printed with Meghan spelled my way :)

I wish there was a cool story behind my name, but it was just a name my parents liked. However, my mom thought my sister was a boy and never picked a name for her. She was “baby no name” for a while. They had to decide on something quickly as they couldn’t leave the hospital without a name.

Fabric me! My full first name is Kathryn, named after my mother, Mary Kathryn (who goes by Mary K.), and my grandmother, Kathryn (she went by Kay). Originally my parents were going to make Kathryn my middle name, naming me Allison Kathryn. Then someone pointed out that my nickname might end up being Alley Kat, so they switched them.

This is an embarrassing story – when my mom was pregnant, they saw the movie Short Circuit, with the robot who has feelings and a personality. Well, the girl is Stephanie, and the robot calls her “Stef-Ah-Nee”… I guess my parents liked the name, and decided to spell it phonetically to boot!
