Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

No significance to my first name, but my middle name (Louise) is a family name. Several Lou’s for the women before me. We gave our first daughter Eloise as a middle name to continue the tradition, with a twist. (Though we had to point out the connection to my mom!)

I was named Nicole because my mother wanted to call me Nikki, because she thought that was so cute. However, that nickname NEVER stuck and so far no one in my life calls me Nikki. On the otherhand. The nicknames Cole, Coley, Colester, Coley Schmoley, etc. have all stuck.

FABRIC ME! I was named around the time that Carly Simon was popular. My Dad loved ‘Carly’, my Mom loved ‘Rebecca’, so there you have it! Carly Rebecca. I always liked my name. Relatively unique (for someone my age anyway), but not weird.

I’ve always loved that my name means “princess” – which I totally used to my advantage growing up. I remember my mom telling me the other names they’d considered for me and being outraged that they didn’t name me “Victoria.” This conversation happened at the height of my Spice Girls obsession, and for some deluded reason I thought that if my named was Victoria *I* could have been Posh Spice.

I couldn’t imagine being named anything else but Rebecca! My mom definitely picked the name. I got called Rachel for the longest time in my 4th grade class though because me and this other girl (named Rachel) in my class both had red hair…so the teacher would always mix us up.

    FABRIC ME!

My parents compromised for my name, one wanted Callie and the other Cathlin so they mashed it together for Callin. I’ve met very few Callin’s, or any other variation of spelling. It was horrible growing up, no one can pronounce it correctly and it’s gender ambiguous apparently so sometimes they’d assume I was a boy. I’ve grown to like it now though.

Depending on where you look, Hallie is a feminine diminutive of Harold, meaning “army ruler”. I think I recall it having a prettier Greek meaning, like “the wind”, but I don’t think my mom’s source was Greek.

Though my mom liked the anonymity of her married name, Mary Smith, she thought that her children should have unique names to go with Smith. She met an old woman named Hallie and liked it.

In Greece childen are very common to be named after their grandparents, as I was too after my beloved grandmother. Not a day goes by that I don’t remember her when someone calls me.
It also means (in Ancient greek of course) “the one with the beautiful voice” and in greek mythology Calliope was the muse of epic poetry.
It is not a very common name either.

My mom’s best friend was determined to name me Orson, and bought absolutely anything with that name on it (the Orson reindeer ornament still goes on the Christmas tree every year). Luckily, the doctor read my ultrasound incorrectly so I got a more conventional female name–of course, my last name means vinegar in German, so conventional is relative.

My dad wanted to name me Elijah after Elijah in the Bible. My mom wasn’t up for using Elijah for a girl. So she came up with Cherith Brooke. Elijah hid by the brook Cherith in 1 Kings 17.

People constantly say Cherith wrong and rarely spell it correctly, but I’m really glad I don’t have an ‘ordinary’ name. At least I know when someone says my name correctly that they are speaking to me and not the person behind me.
