Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

my name is after my great grandmother (only switching the order of the first and middle name). i’ve always liked my name, but kinda went through a phase of wishing for something different in middle school when there were 5 other girls with that same name in my class. or really, i guess i wished THEY were named something different. :)

Fabric Me! My name is Chandler, and my parents wanted something that was unusual and could be a name for either a boy or a girl. I love having something unique (although the FRIENDS references get a little old.) My middle name, Elizabeth, is my mother’s middle name and will be a middle name that I pass on to a future daughter!

No special meaning behind my name. Just something my mom liked. Although, when she told her grandma what she’d be naming me, grandma said, “why are you giving her a boy’s name?!” Time sure changed that.

Yes, now you all will spend the next 5 minutes chuckling about all the names I can’t name my children… hehe.

FABRIC ME! The funnier story is about my middle name, Regan. My parents picked it from Shakespeare’s King Lear. She was one of the daughters, but unfortunately they hadn’t read it in a while and she turns out to be one of the evil daughters. I love to raz them about this, but I guess it could have been worse. The oldest evil daughter was named Goneril. I actually love my middle name and had a moment in middle school where I thought about using it for my first name.

My name means “beloved”. It was fun when I was taking Latin classes because it is literally the Latin feminine gerundive or future passive participle for “she/something who must be loved” or “she/something which is going to be loved”. It made learning those tricky tenses much easier!

It also was one of the most popular names in the years around my birth, probably helped by a popular rock song titled “Amanda” released in 1986. As a result, I’ve always ended up in classes, teams, or workplaces with several people named Amanda which can get quite confusing!

    FABRIC ME!

My Catholic mother named me after the blessed mother, Madonna Maria (Mother Mary). But she cut off the “Ma” at the beginning, and the “a” at the end which left me with Donna Marie, the quintessential 50’s girl name. (Yes, I am one of the old ladies who reads your blog.) I love my name, but secretly, I’ve always wanted to be named Laura.

Oh, and I need fabric for my living room curtains.

My name could mean “alone, solitary” or “unique.” Either way, the most special thing about it is that my parents had to fight with a government official as the name was considered too “western.” I was born behind the Iron Curtain, back when government controlled everything–even what you named your kids.

My mom wanted my name to be Julia but my dad thought it sounded too “posh.” I guess my dad was in charge of getting my birth certificate sorted out (this was England 27 years ago, not sure exactly how it worked) so he unilaterally picked “Julie” instead. Needless to say, my mom was not pleased. Also needless to say, they have now been divorced for more than 20 years…hahaha

FABRIC ME! I’m the only girl in my family. My mom couldn’t decide what to name ‘her’. She added an ‘a’ to the end and thought she made up a unique name. My Dad burst her bubble and told her the name already existed in Greek mythology–the sister & wife of Zeus & goddess of women/marriage/hearth. My mom liked the name even more. And, in the words of Paul Harvey, now you know the rest of the story!

    FABRIC ME!

My name started as Allison Brooke ’cause my dad liked Allison and my mom liked Brooke, so they compromised, but I got stuck being that kid who goes by her middle name. Imagine evvvvvvvvvery time your name gets called in school and your “friends” look at you all googly-eyed b/c you have to correct the teacher.
So I got married and ditched that ish! I dropped my first name, which I never used, and took my husband’s name. I had to apply for two SS cards. They were a little suspicious, b/c who does that? But giggles when: Verizon called me to let me know that “Allison” wanted to make unauthorized payments on “Brooke’s” account. Tee-hee. Also, I got two issues of magazines for a while: one to Allison, one to Brooke.
