Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! My parents said they chose my name because it was different but not too strange, and it didn’t have a common nickname associated with it. They both hated that people called them by their nicknames. :)

I don’t know how they came upon my name but while in college and before Facebook, I somewhow found another girl from Arizona with my same first and last name. I am Amanda Michelle and she was Amanda Lynn… I sent the email to my parents and my mom replied that she wanted to name me Amanda Lynn too actually but my dad didn’t want me to sound like an instrument… lol.

My parents named me Anna Katherine after my mom’s grandmother. But, they liked the name Anna so much, that I happens to also be named after a car and a cat.

My name is a Tahitian name and means State of Peace. My dad picked it at the hospital when he saw pass by one of their friends that was passing by the room. He thought it was a perfect name for me. They didn’t know I was a girl but were hoping after 2 boys.

FABRIC ME! I was named after a cute baby in a Bell South phone commercial. My middle name, Ann is a family name. It’s also my mother’s middle name, my grandmother’s first name, and my great-grandmother’s middle name. So it’s a bit more significant.

No truly special meaning to my name originally. My older sister has an S name, then my younger brother was also given an S name to complete the S trifecta. However, I did get my Mom’s middle name (Marie) passed down to me!

My name came out of a baby name book. My mom had numerous names picked but all made my dad put his foot down so my mom told him to pick it. I like my name but I also like Tory and Laine (which were my moms picks).

My name was inspired by a character in a book–not because they liked the character exactly, but they liked the name, and they happened upon it at the right time. :) I never disliked being named Jessica, but sometimes felt like it was too trendy a name for me, the quiet bookworm.

I’m currently pregnant, and our discussions for names have been very focused on namesakes and name meanings, so we have good (hopefully inspiring) reasons to tell our kids someday why they are named what they are named!

I’m named after my Dad’s mother, who passed away while my mom was pregnant with me. I hardly ever meet anyone else named Helen, so when I was younger I wanted a more “mainstream” name like Jennifer or Sarah. Now that I realize how special it really is, I wouldn’t trade my name! :)

I don’t believe my name has any significance, but I have always imagined that my parents got my name from Saturday Night Fever, since it came out around the same time I was born.

    This is, admittedly, odd.

But I love my name and hate it when people try to abbreviate it.

Wow, I was just putting together an order for OFS today, in fact…I’d love to win.

My name is Wendy and I was presumably part of that initial wave of popularity of the name Wendy in the decade or two after Disney’s Peter Pan came out. Also, the song “Windy” was #1 for almost my entire birth month.

I was originally going to have a different first name but my grandmother kept protesting. She finally admitted that name had been the name of her father’s mistress, so….Wendy it was!

My name is derived from Eric, which is an English/Swedish name and means “ruler.” There is no family significance other than my parents narrowed it down to three name combinations and picked from there. I have always liked my name because it’s not as common as some others; I also like it spelled with a “k” since that is less common than “c.”

    FABRIC ME!

My parents both knew a couple girls named ‘Holly’ in high school and told me, “We thought it was a really nice name and they were both nice people.” I found my mom’s old calligraphy set when I was in middle school and she had practiced writing both Holly and Jamie, but my dad had liked Holly better. If I were a boy, my dad was pulling for ‘Randy’, much to mom’s horror.

When I was little, I wanted very badly for my name to be ‘Mary’ because it seemed like the ultimate girl name. After feeling bad for telling my mom that I wanted to change my name, I named several of my stuffed toys and dolls Mary instead.

I wish there was a better story behind my name. It is purposefully misspelled (see that extra “i”) and yet my mom has no good reason for it. She just didn’t want it to be too normal. Then she went and named my sister one of the most common names in the 80s (Amanda); apparently she learned that a unique name was not all its cracked up to be – too bad I’m the one stuck with it!
