Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

No story that I know of, just a name my folks liked…However, when starting school my parents insisted people call me by both my first and middle name so I wouldn’t be another ‘Mary’ but with in my immediate family they all call me Mare or Mary.

Fabric me! My middle name was after my great great aunt. My first name my parents said they saw on a tombstone and liked. Not sure if that’s really true but I wouldn’t put it past them.

“FABRIC ME!!!” My name came from the 1973 movie “Paper Moon” with Ryan and Tatum O’neil. My mom and dad really loved that movie, (and the name.) I DID NOT like my name at all, when I was young, but as I grew up I learned to love it!

FABRIC ME! My name is Welsh and means something like “gentle but strong”. I like to imagine I can be both when inclined! And as a child I tried to convince my parents to change my name to Stacey because I thought it was the height of cool (thanks to the Babysitter Club books)

My name means “Ireland.” The name was just something my parents liked . . . although I was apparently almost a Shannon. I remember asking my Mom in nursery school if I could change my name to Jennifer. Clear sign I was born in the late 70s, right?!

My full name (Evgeniya – Yehf-GEH-nee-ya) is from Greek “noble” or “good genes.” When my mom was a kid, she read a story about a girl whose name was Jenia (most common nickname for Evgeniya in Slavic countries) . She loved it. So she gave it to me. I guess, dad didn’t mind :)

I don’t think there’s any family connection with my name and I think it’s just because my parents liked it. Apparently it’s a Medieival Norman nickname for Alice and means noble.
My Mum’s family is Ukrainian and for a while as a kid I did wish I’d had a Ukrainian name.

My parents did not have ultrasound proof, but somehow were convinced I was a boy. They had a boy name chosen, but didn’t even give thought to a girl name. Then I arrived, and they had no idea what to call me. My brother was nine years old at the time and they consulted him. He named me after a (much) older girlfriend of my aunt’s whom he had a crush on. Then they added my Mom’s middle name. Ta Da. Amy Marie. :)

Fabric Me! My parents picked my name because they thought it was unusual. I’m not sure how they thought that since I now know many Heathers and there was, in fact, a movie about Heathers. When I was little, I wished my name was something like “diamond” or “crystal” instead. I got over that.

I don’t know where my first name comes from, my mother passed away and I am not sure where Susana comes from or why she gave that name. But my middle name, which is the one I go by “Patricia” aka “Paty” was given to me by my older sister who insisted my mom she name me after a princess character from a book she use to read. Thanks to my sister I was saved from being called Susana! Thanks goodness!

Turns out my blue collar, big gruff of a bear father picked my name, Nicole. Though I always went by Nikkie, and of course on the grade school playground it rhymed with lots of yucky words. One afternoon I came home crying that I hated my name, my dad, still in is dirty work clothes, pulled me over on his knee and said he thought my name was beautiful and he had chose it for me. After that big hug, I never felt bad about it ever again!

My name is a mash-up of Antonia (my gramma) and Henriette (my mom)… I like it, though I wish often for something that’s easier… I dream of someone somewhere reading my name for the first time, and then pronouncing it correctly :D (It’s pronounced Tawn-yet)… hence my children having ‘real’ names :)

My parents told me my name came from the classic cartoon He-Man and She-Ra. They said my name was a character on the show named Princess Celyse. I tried searching online for any proof of this, episodes listing the characters, but had no luck… I assumed my mom was creative with the spelling of my name, and maybe the princess on the show had a much simpler spelling, like Salise or something. Anyway that’s how I got my name, and I love it, so do most people who hear it!

My parents chose to call me by my middle name and, while I like the name, it was always a headache correcting teachers, interviewers, new employers, etc. It also meant I had to get a court-order name change after getting married, since I couldn’t just drop my middle name.
