Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Alas nothing overly meaningful attached to my name…However my initials before I got married were B.A.M, and I always felt like that was at least a small bragging point;)

My mother had a few names picked out… 1 – April -since I was born in April. 2 – Easter, i was born on Easter, and has never landed on it since I was born. 3 – Samantha – Mom loved Bewitched, my older sister is Tabitha, but she ended up with Carrie…Now here is the kicker. She came up with that name because she was reading Stephen Kings – Carrie while pregnant. It certainly is a conversation starter. When I was younger I never liked my name but now I have grown to love it.

Fabric me! My mom just liked this name and I think she was rebelling against formal names. She couldn’t stand Christina. So my legal name was christy. But everyone else must have had a similar idea because I always grew up with lots of christy, kristie, Chrissy in my classes.

FABRIC ME! No significance to my name except that the gender neutralness of it, combined with the masculine spelling of my middle name(Rene), suggests that my parents actually wanted a boy. Alas, they got me.

P.S. – made a headboard out of the top middle fabric… gorgeous!

My parents have said my namesake is my great-grandfather, Christian. But my favorite story is while my mom was pregnant with me, my grandma suggested that I be named after my grandfather, Ruben. My mom said “That’s a nice name, but we’re having a girl.” My grandma’s reply: “So?” I’m glad my parents didn’t take her suggestion. :)

FABRIC ME! My mom named me Anna Christine after her best friend. They called her best friend “Christy” instead of Anna. She liked that, but decided to call me “Chrissie.” Why? Because in 1980, ‘Threes Company’ was a big hit. So, yes, I was really named after Suzanne Somers’ dumb blonde character in a tv sitcom. My whole life I have had to explain how I got ‘Chrissie’ out of ‘Anna.’ ;)

I’m named after my dad, Michael. While I’ve always wonded how I’d feel about a different name, I am sure I like my parents’ final selection (versus the other contenders listed in my baby book). Runners up omitted here because no one likes to hear their name referred to negatively … Just in case there’s a ‘girl going by a 70s androgynous first name and jazz legend second name out there somewhere :)

FABRIC ME! My given name is Jennifer, but when I was six I changed it to Jamie. I’d heard the name Jamie on tv; I thought it was from a Disney movie, but my mother tells me it was actually from the Bionic Woman (Jamie Summers). I just fell in love with the name “Jamie” and I went to school the next day and told everyone to call me Jamie, not Jennifer. It stuck and now only my relatives call me Jennifer.

nothing special about my name. it’s Iva, by the way. My parents decided they will pick their kids names however they like, but namesakes weren’t that common in my family in the first place. I like the name, up until moving to college-city I almost never met other Ivas. Actually, I met one. So the name made me feel unique, even though it’s a pretty common name… just not that popular in the city I grew up in.

For the first week I was alive I didn’t have a name. My parents kept going back and forth between several different names. They both like the name Paige but didn’t like any names as a middle name. Eventually, they decided to name me after father, Terry. They chose this because despite the fact that I have two older siblings, I was the only one who he actually got to be at the birth. However, to keep things from being too confusing they decided to call me by my middle name Paige, the only name they could really agree on.
