Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

It took my parents until I was over a week old before they could decide on a name for me, and finally it was because they said I “looked like a Lisa!”

The “Me” of my name is from the first two letters in my mother’s name. The “leah” part is from the bible – you know the unloved and unwanted first wife who would have been an old maid had her father not tricked her husband. It’s really not the best naming story. I guess my family just likes an underdog.

Chelsey is a form of the true English orgin of Chelsea meaning a port for chalk or limestone (aka not the most exciting meaning in the world). Alas, it was a compromise between my father’s pick Christina and my mother’s pick Lauren. I’m not too fond of my name but I guess it could’ve been worse!

I was really excited to get this email today. I subscribe to your posts via email, but always get the email the morning after they have been published, so it’s actually fitting that I got this one today on the 5th as it’s my birthday today – so what a fitting day to tell you about my name! My parents always like Caroline and thought they would call me Carrie. They had bibs sewn with Carrie and called me Carrie and told people that was my nickname. Then I was born and my mom said that I just looked too much like a Caroline to ever be called Carrie. 29 years later and I’ve only ever gone by Caroline. :)

leslie was my mom’s best friend in high school. nothing too exicting about that.

my middle name, dardinelle, is after a small town in the sierras (california) where my parents would go hiking/camping, etc. and it’s actually spelled dardanelle (after the dardanelle straights in france), but my parents forgot the right way to spell it so…also rhymes with gargamel (from the smurfs).

my maiden name was laverne which is awesome on its own because, well, i could get away with wearing large cursive “l”s on my v-neck sweaters! (please tell me you get the reference)!

FABRIC ME! My parents got the idea for my name from a song by Laura Nyro (http://youtu.be/ij8eBngOI-o). I had to call my mom to find out the name of the song and it was pretty hilarious:

What was the song that gave you and Dad the idea for my name?
    “I can’t remember. Google ‘Emily.'”
Mom, there’s gonna be a million results.
    “Try ‘Emily 1970s’.”
When’s the last time you Googled something?
    “Try it in YouTube.”
    There are 750,000 results!
    “Did you try ‘Emily 1970s’?”
    Mom!
“Hang on, let me ask Dad.”

30 seconds later, I get a call back: “It’s by Laura Nyro.”
