Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My mom wanted to name me Katherine after her grandma but she hated all associated nicknames (Katie, Kathy, etc.) so she made it my middle name instead and gave me an un-nickname-able first name that just sounded nice.

    FABRIC ME!
You might want to be sitting for this – it is lengthy. My parents lived in Istanbul, Turkey in the 1970s and my mom couldn’t work due to the country’s Muslim culture. They chose to live on the ‘Asian’ side which meant my mom was a bit of a fish out of water. There was a woman in their building who spoke 7 different languages and took my mother under her wing (enough metaphors already!). Neyir Hannam (no idea on sp the 2nd word) taught my mother Turkish, would take her out to the market and running errands and made she sure understood the culture, basically kept her out of trouble. They got to know her very well in the 4 years they lived there and named me after her.
When I was a kid they told me the meaning was ‘falling star’ which was probably a much better option than the truth which would have had me traipsing around claiming that everyone should be feeling great as my name really means ‘spiritual enlightenment’.

My parents wanted a pretty sounding Biblical name, so Sarah it is. I like my name, but I have always wished for a less common name. All of my children will have more unique names. :)

My parents expected me to be blond and blue eyed just like my mom…but lo and behold, they got a blue eyed brunette who looked a lot like her dad. My blond name would have been Kirsten, but they didn’t feel that fit their current child. So Miriam is not only a good Biblical name, but also my grandmother’s best friend’s name. Growing up I didn’t like my name – I thought Hannah would be cooler. Now I’m pretty good with it!

I was supposed to be a boy so my parents hadn’t even picked out a girl’s name. So when I came out a girl it was back to the drawing board. My dad brought the baby name book into the hospital and they got as far as ‘Allison’ and that was all she wrote!

It’s my nickname that has a story. When I was born and in the hospital, my grandfather came to meet me and told my mom I was a little midget. My mom, in her emotional hormone overload started to cry and told him not to call me that. So then he amended it to “she’s just a widdle widget” and from that day on I’ve been called Widget or Widge by my entire family. I don’t think my grandmother has called me by my real name (Wendy) for all 29 years of my life!!
