Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric Me! My name (Rosien… pronounced Ro-Sheen) is a (intentional) mispelling of an Irish name (Roisin pronounced Rosh-yn) that means “Rose”. My dad spent 2 years in Ireland in the 70s (he was an LDS missionary) and came back loving the name. No one ever pronounces my name right, but thats okay, because I’ve been Rosie my whole life anyway. :)

I was named after my great-grandmother, who was a French-Canadian midwife. A discussion about family during which I was trying on my grandma’s little white gloves from the 1960s led my parents to tell me (at age 14) that I had inherited “the birthing hands”…yep.

No special reason why my parents picked my name except that they were going with a K theme for their kids. Glad I am Kari with a K and not a C, always felt a touch hipper because of that…. Silly the way we perceive things! Would love to win this giveaway, my grandma just bought me a sewing machine and I am dying to whip up some new curtains for the living and dining room!!!

Now I love it, and I would love to get this fab freebie since I am moving soon and need to get fabric for new curtains!!!!!

FABRIC ME! The story my mother tells me is that she never thought to much to name me while she was pregnant, she expected me to be a boy and as such I was going to be a junior. This little girl came out, my father never took to seriously the task giving as options the most ill sounding names he could think of, so my mom thought in a name that sounded like my fathers. Alba is Latin for white and in Spanish it means dawn, my middle name (what we call, second name) is Marie, very popular back home in the 80’s.

I’ve always hated my name, thinking it was too kid-ish and that it wouldn’t grow up with me. I would have preferred a more classic name, but I’m one of the older Brittanys around. So I guess leading the pack of Brittanys is a victory?? :)

Fabric me! I am named for a cartoon character. When my mom was a little girl there was a cartoon in the newspaper about the Berry family. At some point they added a new baby to the family and named her Holly Berry. My mom decided then that if she ever had a little girl she would name her Holly. It was a very uncommon name then and it was still uncommon when I was born. Coincidentally, it turned out my mom’s grandmother was named Holly. She didn’t find that out until I was born and people asked if I was named after her!
