Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I didn’t care for my name until I learned it’s meanings. It has two. One is ‘the Pearl.’ The other is ‘brave’. Even though my parents just chose it because they liked it, I seem to have grown into it.

My name doesn’t have a special meaning but I love the meaning in our son’s name. My husbands family have a tradition of the eldest son being named Jan (they are Dutch) which when they emigrated to Australia became John so that is his first name but he was born on the birthday of a close friend of ours so we gave him the middle name Joseph after our friend. Also helped greatly when my father-in-law was still alive to be able to call our son JJ and save a bit of confusion on too many Johns.

My first name is Cassandra, named after the baby on Little House on the prairie. My middle name is Kay, which is a middle name a lot of women in my family share. I decided to continue the tradition when I named our second daughter Laney Kay. My nickname is Casie (pronounced Casey) instead of Cassie, because my mom wanted a shortened version of my name but thought Cassie sounded snobbish!

My name doesn’t have any special significance–my parents just liked it. My middle name has a funny story, though–when I was born, the doctor asked my mom what my middle name was. My parents had totally forgotten to pick out a middle name for me! They decided on the spot to make it my mom’s name, Nora, and I’m so glad they did!

My mom’s middle name is Lynn and my grandmothers name is Marilynn so my mom wanted “Lynn” in some form to make it in the name. Lindsay Wagner was popular in the 80’s so my mom liked it and decided to choose Lindsay! Not very exciting! Haha! In the early 90’s I desperately wanted to change my name to either Crystal or Dawn. I have no idea why, just sounded much more exciting then my name! :)

My name is the worst name given to any kid. Ever. In the whole world.
It’s very french, I don’t speak a word of it, no one can pronounce it (unless they speak french) so weeding out telemarketers is pretty easy.

My dad’s side of the family is Serbian, and my dad’s dad died when my mom was pregnant with me. They went to Illinois for the big Orthodox Serbian funeral and my mom met ALL the family. She said at least half of the people there were from the ‘old country’ and barely spoke any English. One person she met was my great-aunt, Ana. She was a classic beauty who wore really interesting hats, but with really strong arms from baking and raising nine kids. My mom and her grew really close, and she is the one I’m named after.
