Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

No fun naming story, other than that my parents really thought I was going to be a boy, so they were very ready to meet Eric Thomas, instead of Mary!

    FABRIC ME!!

My name was totally unplanned. My parents just thought of it after I was born, and went with it, although my mother does say that she loves Maya Angelou and that might have sparked the idea. It’s a really unique name, and I love being different! I never wanted to change it, until three years ago I found out the the German convention is to spell it “Maja.” Now I’m in love with the J and would like that, haha.

FABRIC ME! My mom fell in love with the name that just happened to be the name of her Irish Setter’s mother. In other words, I am named after a dog. Fittingly, many a person has told me, “I love your name…It’s the name of my dog.” Sigh.
Part 2: While my name is not so Anglo, I am. Makes for some surprised looks during first meetings.

FABRIC ME……The strange thing about my name is the way that it is spelled. I always joke with my mother that she must have been on some serious medication after giving birth to me to have spelled it the way that she did. The strange thing is that she didnt even remember that she had spelled it this way until I was 16 and had to have my birth certificate for my drivers license. I had spelled my name the wrong way for all those years! LOL!

Mom wanted ‘Beth’. Dad thought that it was a nickname, not a real name. So they named me Elizabeth and called me Beth. When I started preschool, I told the teacher ,’Only my Mommy can call me Beth.” They had to re-label everything. I have been Elizabeth ever since.

My name was the first in the small baby name book that my very young parents picked up. They looked at the first name and the last name (in this case, Amanda and Zelda) and chose Amanda. But my Mom still calls me Zelda as a pet name of sorts, which I have always thought was pretty awesome.

Fabric me! I am named after my mother. Originally I was supposed to be named Karla after my father Carlos but thankfully, last minute they decided on Lorena. My mother died when I was 7 and my grandparents adopted me, giving me their last names, so I now have her exact name. I feel it has, in a way, kept her present in my life. :-)

My name, Jennifer Marie. My mom had always loved the name Jennifer and wanted that to be one of her daughters to have that name. As for my middle name, it’s my Mom’s middle name and she sort of passed it on to me being her first daughter. I think it was super sweet and I plan to do the same for my first daughter.
