Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I was my parents third attempt for a boy. They were going to call me Nicholas and told the doctor to send me back when I arrived with the wrong equipment. Luckily they changed their minds, decided to keep me and called me Nicole instead.

I was named after my great grandmother. I always loved the connection to the past, so I named my daughter after her great grandmother. When I told her she said she’d rather be named after Rapunzel. Everyone’s a critic.

My name is versatile I could’ve been Erin or Aaron, depending on which bits I came out with. My mom swears that she “just liked that name” and was not trying to match it to my older brother, Erick.

my name isn’t very special or unique… however, it was picked by my sister who was 3 at the time i was born. every one else in my family thought i’d pop out as a boy, so they only picked the name mark. my sister, knowing better, apparently told everyone for months that she’d have a baby sister named michelle. well, i’m a girl and my name is michelle. thank you sister.

My name, Caprice, is actually one of my favorite things about me. It means something like sudden change of mind or I have even seen “freakish” for its meaning but love that it is somewhat different. My mother read a book about the Island of Capri and on the Island was a goddess named “Caprice”. She loved it so much and it became my name. I wish I can find this book-no such luck. It would be great to read the story.

My parents had 3 names picked out, all specifically chosen because they were international (we had family in Norway, The Netherlands and Australia (and now the US :))). One night, whilst driving home, my brother asks: So, when is Charlotte arriving? And that’s how they decided on that name. :)

No real significance behind my name, but I think it would be cool to be an Amy or Olive or Sadie. When I was in school, Jennifer was the popular name and one year I had 3 Jennifers in my class. One of us got to be Jenn, one was Jenny, and one was Jennifer.

My dad chose my name (and my younger sister’s name too) because he wanted short, simple, easy to pronounce and spell names. My mom chose the middle names for both of us. I used to look up my name in name books and dictionaries…it is a derivitive of Elizabeth. I never really wanted a different name, but would have been happy with a name that could have had a better nickname than LisaLou :)

My dad named me, and gave me the middle name Mary, after his mom’s mother. Great Grandma Mary was a “big mama”, always there to give a hug, advice, and a good meal, and she was a caring mother to thirteen children! I used to hate my first name, but I feel I’ve grown into it, and I hope to live up to my middle name someday!

My middle name is Anne after my grandmother. In my family the middle name is Anne for all the girls and Howes all for boys. Why do we use Howes? The story I heard (and it might just be a story) is that we are descendants from a man and his mistress. The mistress gave their son the sir name of his father for his middle name and insisted that all of his male children carry that name too. Wether or not its true the name Howes has been used this way for generations. As far as I know ALL of my boy cousins on that side of the family have it (and theres allot of them).

Well my parents (my ma anyhow) obviously liked ethnic names, but I have no rightful idea why they chose eileen. I *think* my dad was pulling for Jacqueline! It means “Lady of Brightness” & is a form of the name “Helen”. 2 good anecdotes: My ma went by her middle name Pauline, & my sisters are Maureen & Kathleen -we all rhyme! Also “Marie” was put in the wrong box on my birth certificate, so many people call me eileen marie. (I also don’t capitalize my first or middle name -weird tick!)
