Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

My dad was the one who chose my name, it has no special meaning other than he had liked it forever. My mom wanted to name me Kylie (because I’m a girl) but my dad won. I love my name and have never hated my parents for choosing it. It has caused some sticky situations in the past though – think being signed up for boys P.E. class in seventh grade because they thought I was a guy!

First let me preface this by saying, I am female. Most “Tristen/Tristan/Tristin/Triston/Tristun” in this world I have come to learn are male, however I am female. I’d also like to say that yes.. I am named after Brad Pitts character in Legend of the Fall, however this is not the case… but you can keep asking and I’ll keep telling you no. Sadly, I am named after the actor Tristan Rogers who played Robert Scorpio on General Hospital fro 80-92. However, my EXTREMELY wonderful and thoughtful father changed the spelling to TristEn instead of the masculine TristAn. I LOVE my name! I love that it (until recently) was so unique. My family also has a “unique name streak” My dad’s name is Rebbie and my brother is Revan. So we are all a strange and unique bunch. Thanks for listening/reading my name story. I love your blog and can’t wait to start DIYing our new home!!

    FABRIC ME!

My name was random. For nine months, my parents swore that I was a boy from all the kicking. My boy name was Benedikt (yes, like Benedict Arnold), but this version was the German version named after a political family member from Munchen, Germany. He survived a concentration camp internment after speaking out against Hitler. Well, I was to carry on his name. When I popped out, I was missing some parts (the important boy ones). Once my doctor recovered from fainting at my birth, my parents were: “Oh darn, we didn’t pick out a girl’s name.” They opened the baby name book and there was “Nicola” and I was named. My sister’s name is Muffy….together our pink princess phone number looked like french poodles who had a phone line (Niki and Muffy).

FABRIC ME! My name was originally “Ashley,” a totally normal and common late 70’s name. Then my parents actually had my birth certificate amended to change it to “Ashlie.” Ok great, it makes a pretty common name a little “different,” but no one ever spells it right!

Fabric Me! My name (Amy) means “benevolent or beloved one” in French. I don’t think that’s why my parents picked it, though. I think it was more along the lines of they liked it, and it wasn’t a name on either side of the family, so no one could be upset.

Fabric me! My name is Karen because my parents’ first named me “Sharon” then decided there were too many Ss in my name. They hadn’t prepared a girl’s name, thinking I would be a boy. When I was born a girl, “James” didn’t seem appropriate before. My middle name, Elizabeth, is my aunt’s middle name.

    FABRIC ME!

I was named after my great-grandmother Margot. When I was younger, I always wished my name was something more trendy like an Ashley or Jennifer, because every person I met would tell me “Oh Margaret, that’s my grandmother’s name”. It wasn’t always fun trying to pick up guys in college and having them tell me that my name reminded them of their grandmother who was in a nursing home drinking scotch and ranting about hooligans (although I am sure that’s what i’ll be doing when I’m 90). But now, I am happy to be named after a woman who at her time broke many social barriers by being a well known journalist and political commentator.
