Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! The “y” in my name came from a bout of 1st grade creativity. My parents were fine with the change because apparently I was obsessed with Crystal Gayle at the time — and they were just relieved I wasn’t adopting a “stripper name” as my dad gently put it.

No story behind my name, just that it IS my full name. Everyone always asks what it is short for and I ALWAYS have to spell it for people. My parents must have picked the least common way to spell it. At least they pulled the same moves on my sister Tricia too ;)

FABRIC ME! I’ve got no cool story about my name, but I have one for my son. When he was in utero, I called him “the Manatee” because a 9 week old fetus has a big fat body and tiny little flippers. That got shortened to “Manny” — and it stuck.

FABRIC ME!!! I’m called Catherine after my maternal grandmother. She was known as Kate to everyone but only my parents have ever called me Kate or Katie (usually when they’ were trying to wheedle their way into getting me to do something I didn’t want to do!
On a side note, I wanted to take the name Vivienne for my confirmation but my mam insisted it was a man’s name (even though I got a calendar of saints’ names to prove her wrong!). She wanted me to take Bernadette (after a cousin of hers)…

I was named after my grandmother (dads mom) who was born in 1900 and was of Cherokee Indian heritage. I’m the last of four girls and looked the most like an Indian baby (so I’m told) which is why I got the honor. I always thought Stacy sounds like such a modern name, not one you’d hear in 1900, especially when she had siblings with names like Pearl or Bertie Lee.
definitely gt the good one. lol

In 1984, my parents had never heard the name “Katelyn” before and thought they were creating a name that they loved. In first grade there were 4 Katelyn’s (Kaitlyn, Caitlin, etc) in my class. Good job being original, Mom and Dad! Middle name is a family name for the first born girl going back 8 generations.

My name is straight from the family. My first name is my grandmothers maiden name. I never loved the name, but I’ve always loved my grandma! My middle name is my grandfather’s name. While “Bruce” is an unusual middle name for a female, it holds a lot of significance in my heart, as my grandfather passed away on my birthday, exactly 5 years before I was born. I have always heard that we were so much alike…would have loved to meet him!

I’m Sarah Virginia, Sarah because my mom loved the name as a girl (and it means “princess,” though I don’t think she loved it for that reason), and Virginia after my grandmother, meaning “pure.” So I guess altogether my name means “Pure Princess,” as in 100% diva, and yesitfitsperfectlyokay. My name is Mary Carol- I’m named after my aunt, whom I adore. I’ve had struggles with my name, though. I hated when people just called me Mary- like teachers in high school- ugh. But everyone seemed burdened by having to say it all. When I was in college and met my hubbie-to-be, he started calling me MC and it stuck. I think going by MC has helped me to appreciate my name a bit better, because now I like to introduce myself by my whole name…and YES- you have to say it ALL!
