Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! My mom wanted a name close to hers “Jayne”, so she picked Jayme. She has a thing for the letter Y and tried to get me to name my son “Jaymes” instead of James. Uhh, no thanks!

My name means “From the Ash Tree meadows” and I have no idea what that actually means. My name had no real significance to my mom when she picked it other than she liked it. I am totally fine with my name as it is, I just wish it had a cooler “meaning”.

My real name is a combo of my parent’s names. I have never met another person with my name. I have always liked it perfectly well, and I certainly have some funny stories because of it.

My name is Mary Susan. The Mary is a family name in the maternal line and Susan came from the fact that my parents always wanted a little girl named Susie. They wanted this so badly they actually named a little dog they got early in their marriage “Susie”. I always joked I was named after the dog!

Apparently my parents weren’t feeling very creative, since I’m one of the millions of Jennifers born in 1981. :) I do sometimes wish they had chosen something a little more original since I have, oh, roughly 72 friends who share my name. But my brother wanted to name me Tiffany, so I’m glad they went with the trend! (Not that there’s anything wrong with that–I’m just NOT a Tiffany!)

My name is Courtney and my parents thought I was going to be a boy, but felt it could go either way. I think I was named after someone my mom babysat for, yet she loves to say how tacky it is to not use a family name! Ironically, I named my daughter after her and my sister and we call her by her middle name, which was not a family name!

My mom picked out the name Lucy Zenith for a daughter when she was younger. In a last minute decision, she chose Ashley instead. At the time she thought it was VERY original. Alas, there were many other families who had the same idea. I grew up with at least 4 other Ashleys in my grade. Sometimes I wish my name was Lucy Zenith!

My name means “beloved.” My parents picked it because they liked it (along with a million other parents in the late 70’s…I graduated with 7 Amy’s!!!!). My dad has always joked that they should have named me Georgette because I was born on George Washington’s birthday. I think I would have made an awesome Georgette, Georgie, or (my personal fav) Gigi!

Unfortunately, my parents only had a boy’s name picked out for each of their children’s births (we were all girls). So as we each entered the world not as “William Daniel,” they had to just pick a name they liked. As a result, there’s no sweet meaning behind my name, but at least they chose a name they liked!

My parents picked Emily because it was not very popular in 1979. However, now it seems that every single child I come across is named Emily. I will say, it was really nice to grow up a the only Emily in class, and for the most part, the only Emily my age now.
