Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name is a good mix of TVLand fav. “Bewitched”, and the bible. Tabitha was a disciple full of good works and acts of charity. While I wish I could wiggle my noise and make things happen, I prefer the biblical version!

I was the “jackpot” name – it came from both sides of the family, so there was no bickering about favoritism. My parents also thought it would be one of those old-fashioned names that no one else would have…but it turned out to be second only to Jennifer the year I was born! Whoops!

Fabric me! I was sort-of named after a great-grandmother, but mostly my parents picked names they liked, and that were unconventional at the time. I’m almost always the only Andrea wherever I go (especially because I pronounce it very Chicago: pinch-your-nose-and-say-nasally-AAAAAANNN-dree-a).

My mom had a best friend who’s younger sister’s name was Amy and she always said that if she had a girl she would like an Amy too.
Being a child of the 70’s they did a lot of explaining to people that no, their daugher was not named after Amy Carter. What’s even better is that my brother Luke was born in 1980 and again they had to explain that he was not named after Luke Skywalker.

When I was born my parents were very suprised that I was a girl. They were certain they were having a boy and had a name picked. Sam. Well, I’m not sure why they didn’t just go with Samantha, but I ended up Jennifer (like many, many others in the late 70s) and we got a dog. A boy… named Sam. :)

Fabric Me! (Please!) My name is actually from my Great-Grandmother on my father’s side- she was one of the first accredited female physicians in the whole United States, and my dad only remembered her for her giant cars and how she drove them: by lining the hood ornament up with the center line of roads and flooring it! When she got stopped, she’d yell out, “Doctor’s emergency” and take off again- usually to a sale! The emergency was the doctor being a major thrift shopper! I’ve always loved that connection. :D

FABRIC ME! my name is Italian, Gioia, pronounced JOY-A. it is a common name in Italy and common word, meaning happiness. My great-grandmother, an Italian immigrant, used to say to my 3 older siblings: Tu sei mia gioia (you are my happiness). She died 3 months before I was born in 1981. I was named in her memory after the phrase she often said… The name has been passed on to my little niece who is one of our joys! People can’t pronounce it, but it is a source of great cultural pride for me and the family! Viva ITALIA!

Woohoo, a worldwide giveaway! I’m in, I’m in, all the way from The Netherlands.

My name is a Scandinavian name. My parents have always loved Scandinavia. My older sister and brother were named after our grandparents. Tradition, tradition! When I made my entrance to this world, they finally could show their love for Scandinavia, in my name. I always liked my name, which was not very common during my childhood. Glad I’m not a guy though, my name would have been Fridtjof!! (You can overdo with this Scandinavian thing, mom and dad)

Then my mum had a dream that she had a daughter called Emily who was about three years old (before my parents had me they had lost three little babes) and mum was adamant that Emily had to be in my name somewhere. Thus – Kiara Emily
