After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! I was named after my mom. Love you, Mom!
Tabitha Gollihugh says
FABRIC ME!
My name is a good mix of TVLand fav. “Bewitched”, and the bible. Tabitha was a disciple full of good works and acts of charity. While I wish I could wiggle my noise and make things happen, I prefer the biblical version!
Amanda says
Fabric Me!
I was the “jackpot” name – it came from both sides of the family, so there was no bickering about favoritism. My parents also thought it would be one of those old-fashioned names that no one else would have…but it turned out to be second only to Jennifer the year I was born! Whoops!
Jodie says
“FABRIC ME!” My middle name came from the store Crabtree & Evelyn (it’s Evelyn). My grandma’s favorite saying is “thank goodness she didn’t fall in love with Crabtree!” :)
Andrea says
Fabric me! I was sort-of named after a great-grandmother, but mostly my parents picked names they liked, and that were unconventional at the time. I’m almost always the only Andrea wherever I go (especially because I pronounce it very Chicago: pinch-your-nose-and-say-nasally-AAAAAANNN-dree-a).
thanks for the giveaway, guys!
tricia says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after the president’s daugher and “a pretty girl at church”.
Tara Aiken says
FABRIC ME!
My name means “Tower”. Not sure if that is good or bad?? Guess it depends on the situation!! :)
Tina Martin says
Fabric Me! My name is Christina, but my brother was only 18 months old when I was born, and he said ‘Fristina’ instead. Eventually he just dropped the ‘Fris’ and I’ve been ‘Tina’ ever since.
Amy says
FABRIC ME!
My mom had a best friend who’s younger sister’s name was Amy and she always said that if she had a girl she would like an Amy too.
Being a child of the 70’s they did a lot of explaining to people that no, their daugher was not named after Amy Carter. What’s even better is that my brother Luke was born in 1980 and again they had to explain that he was not named after Luke Skywalker.
Sarah says
FABRIC ME! My parents had trouble picking out a name for me, until my Mom had a dream where she told my Dad to get “Sarah” out of her carseat. They didn’t even know for sure I was a girl, but my Mom has been right with all 3 of her kids, and both of her grandkids!
Megan Wilcox says
FABRIC ME!!! I always wished I had a more unique name. Megan is very common for someone my age group, and my sisters had the more unique names of Logan, Jensen, and Brittan.
Naomi says
FABRIC ME!
My name means pleasant, which I’ve always thought a bit bland, but I guess it’s a nice sentiment to live up to!
Melissa says
FABRIC ME! Great giveaway, guys! Melissa means “honey bee.” I’m not complaining but I do think it’s a name that definitely pegs me as a child from the 80s, even if it does have way-old Greek origins.
Jenny says
FABRIC ME!
When I was born my parents were very suprised that I was a girl. They were certain they were having a boy and had a name picked. Sam. Well, I’m not sure why they didn’t just go with Samantha, but I ended up Jennifer (like many, many others in the late 70s) and we got a dog. A boy… named Sam. :)
Stephanie says
FABRIC ME! No great story behind my name, but my daughter was named by my oldest son and there’s a pretty special story there.
Kristen says
Fabric Me!
My name is just one my parents both liked. I used to wish it had more meaning, but now I like that its simply a shared fondness :)
Stacey F says
FABRIC ME..
My parents named me after a waitress they knew however it was still supposed to be spelled differently, but my dad didn’t do so well on the birth certificate.
Kimberly says
Fabric Me! (Please!) My name is actually from my Great-Grandmother on my father’s side- she was one of the first accredited female physicians in the whole United States, and my dad only remembered her for her giant cars and how she drove them: by lining the hood ornament up with the center line of roads and flooring it! When she got stopped, she’d yell out, “Doctor’s emergency” and take off again- usually to a sale! The emergency was the doctor being a major thrift shopper! I’ve always loved that connection. :D
Megan says
Fabric Me! I was named after a little girl my mom used to babysit. When i was little I swore I’d change it. Now I’m used to it and I just changed my last name so I’m clinging to anything else familiar!
Bernadette says
FABRIC ME! I was named after the church in my mom’s neighborhood, but the funny thing about it is that my father-in-law was in a bowling league at the same church around that time — imagine my surprise when I found a bowling trophy for a league at the church of my namesake. Small world.
Jennifer says
FABRIC ME! My grandpa named me !
Lenora says
FABRIC ME!
My mom liked the name in the E.A.Poe story but liked it with an ‘a’ on the end better. I’ve actually ran into 3 other Lenoras in my lifetime so that is pretty cool. I like it because it is unusual but its hard for people to remember.
Love your site!
Meredith says
Fabric me!!! How I’d love to win this!
My name was inspired by Meredith Baxter Birney – they just liked her name, and thought it sounded “strong” and wasn’t “too girly” (??). Hopefully it’s not a dead-giveaway as an 80s name…
Dana says
FABRIC ME! My mom picked out my name when she was a little girl. Everyone told her she wouldn’t like it once she was an adult. But, she stuck with it and I love it!
Ashley@AttemptsAtDomestication says
FABRIC ME!!!
I think the meaning behind my name has to do with an ash tree. Lame. My sister’s name means Princess which is way cooler.
Lisa says
FABRIC ME! I have the most generic name and always wished I had something more unique!
Ashlynn says
Fabric Me! I want fabric, but the question sealed the deal to enter! I was named after my uncle (if he would have been a girl); But the great part is that the name was picked from a Playboy centerfold in April of ’61(i think ’61).
Paul says
Fabric me!
I was named after my dad.
Kevin says
FABRIC ME!
I have no idea where I got my name. My middle name, though, is my dad’s first name, and his first name is my grandfather’s middle name.
Christina says
FABRIC ME!!
Gioia says
FABRIC ME! my name is Italian, Gioia, pronounced JOY-A. it is a common name in Italy and common word, meaning happiness. My great-grandmother, an Italian immigrant, used to say to my 3 older siblings: Tu sei mia gioia (you are my happiness). She died 3 months before I was born in 1981. I was named in her memory after the phrase she often said… The name has been passed on to my little niece who is one of our joys! People can’t pronounce it, but it is a source of great cultural pride for me and the family! Viva ITALIA!
Stacey says
FABRIC ME!!
No meaning behind my name at all!
Kirsten says
FABRIC ME!!
Woohoo, a worldwide giveaway! I’m in, I’m in, all the way from The Netherlands.
My name is a Scandinavian name. My parents have always loved Scandinavia. My older sister and brother were named after our grandparents. Tradition, tradition! When I made my entrance to this world, they finally could show their love for Scandinavia, in my name. I always liked my name, which was not very common during my childhood. Glad I’m not a guy though, my name would have been Fridtjof!! (You can overdo with this Scandinavian thing, mom and dad)
Janice says
Fabric Me!
My dad chose my name. No special meaning. It was his favorite girl’s name on his list. It also goes along well with my siblings’ J names!
Meg says
FABRIC ME! I don’t really know the story behind my name, other than that it was recycled (the “girl name” that didn’t get used for my older brother).
Carolyn says
FABRIC ME! My first name was my great-grandma’s and my middle name (that I added when I was 18) is my grandma’s name.
Kelly says
FABRIC ME!
I don’t know why my parents picked the name “Kelly”. I do know that it is technically my second name. I was a foster baby that my parents took care of. They adopted shortly thereafter and renamed me.
Kathryn says
FABRIC ME!
I tried to get people to call me Katie when I was in the first grade. I started writing Katie on all my papers, and told all my friends, but it didn’t stick. Just as well, I’ve since realized that Kathryn suits me. :)
andi says
FABRIC ME!
I think my parents just liked the name Andrea, no special significance. I never really liked my name growing up, it always felt too old for me. My nickname (Andi)is a much better fit!
audra says
FABRIC ME!
in grade school/junior high i always wanted to be a Brittany or Courtney…something i thought was really girly and fun, but i’m so glad for my parent’s choice! i do know a few audra’s, but i still feel like it’s fairly unique and not something you hear everyday.
Cindy says
FABRIC ME! My mom wanted to name her first daughter “Cynthia” since she was a little girl. When my grandma had my aunt when my mom was 12 years old, my grandma asked her what name she liked. My mom said “Cynthia”. The inevitable question from everyone is “Were you named after your aunt?”, and I tell everyone “No, she was named after me!”, since my mom wanted to name her first daughter Cynthia well before my aunt was ever born :)
Jenn Wiley says
FABRIC ME!
I’m named Jennifer- which is very common here in the USA. But I was born in Germany, to a German mother and that name was extremely rare and odd to German people, so my mom chose it. Only to move to the USA a year later to have it be the most common name that year… Thanks mom! Lol!
Lindsay Gannon says
FABRIC ME!
My dad selected my name, and named me after Lindsay Wagner, the bionic woman, because he thought she was hot.
Kiara says
FABRIC ME
My mum originally wanted to call my Agnetha (ABBA fan…) but my dad put his foot down (thank God). He’d seen my name in the paper (i was a girl who had almost drowned). Then my mum had a dream that she had a daughter called Emily who was about three years old (before my parents had me they had lost three little babes) and mum was adamant that Emily had to be in my name somewhere. Thus – Kiara Emily
Ashley says
FABRIC ME! No real significance, my mom had just never heard Ashley used for a girl’s name before meeting a co-worker’s kids.
Lindsay says
FABRIC ME! Please! I’m named after my grandmother.
Alissa says
FABRIC ME! I’m not sure if my name means anything but it’s pretty close to the flower alyssum :)
Jennifer Meadows says
FABRIC ME!
I have the most popular girl name for about 20 years running! Not sure what my parents other inspiration might have been. Of course I wanted something a little more unique and named my daughters Aidan and Devin :) They want to be named something girlie and traditional!
Mary Thompson says
Fabric Me!! I am named after my maternal grandmother.
Megan says
Fabric Me! My parents both liked the name and my middle name Elizabeth is the same as my grandma’s :)
