Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I’ve always loved my name…Laura Beth. Both of my parents chose it together. No significance really, just a favorite. I loved Little House on the Prairie because I kind of looked like Laura too. I guess the other option they liked was Wendy Jane, but I’m definitely a Laura!

Fabric Me! My name is the lucky coincidence of my parents being at the right place at the right time. Apparently the Burger King lady who asked the iconic “Do you want fries with that?” had the name Amber, and it struck them as the name of their future unborn daughter. It’s not a bad name, but I always wanted to be Christina.

FABRIC ME! I have never liked my name. I was without a name for 3 days, according to my parents, because I was supposed to be a boy. I was named after a woman my parents knew. I feel like not a lot of thought was put into it. And it’s a plain name. I like my middle name better.

My dad and brother are both named Carlos, and my mom’s name is Diana. When it came time to name me, my parents were going to go with…Diana. For real. Great name, but there was already one in our household. My sister (Jessica) saved the day by telling them that would be super lame, and it wasn’t fair to have a Carlos, Carlos, Diana, Diana and Jessica. So when my parents asked her, “ya got anything better?”, she named me Christina. Pretty sweet thinkin’ for a 9 year old in the 80’s – if I were her, I would have named me She-Ra.

My name actually means raven haired, which is actually fairly appropriate as I had almost black hair when I was born (it lightened up after that though). But my parents picked it not so much for its meaning, but for how it sounds. Different but not so different that you have to repeat it 20 times. And I thank them for it!

Nothing so special about my first name, but I do have 2 middle names. One is my grandmother’s first name, and one is my mom’s middle (also confirmation–don’t get me started on Italian Catholics)name. My plan was to use my mother’s middle name for one of my girls (middle name), and my mo-in-law’s middle name for the other (again, middle), but Hubs ixnayed that, because he thought one of the girls had my middle name, not my mom’s. Now, the other girl has my first name as her middle. Dude, it’s really so confusing, yet not.

My parents were considering “Debbie” but that was the popular name at the time. I have always liked Vicki – but there was a time when I was in school that I wished it was Victoria. People always asked me “isn’t your name REALLY Victoria?”

Only pet peave I have is that most people will spell it either Vickie, Vicky or Vickey. I always thought my spelling was the simpliest! Oh well…

My middle name was my great-grandmother’s name and, the way my mother tells it, was going to be my first name right up until the birth, when she decided she just couldn’t do it. Which I’m grateful for, because my middle name is ‘Winifred.’ Still cool to have it in there, as my Nana was an amazing lady, but ohhh it would be a lot to deal with as a first name.
