After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Sarah M. says
FABRIC ME!
My parents gave me a relative’s name as a middle name, not realizing that when the initial is combined with my maiden name, it sounds like a part of the body. As you can imagine, we were very careful picking out our own kids’ names.
Lauren says
FABRIC ME!
I was supposed to be Erica, but my mom changed her mind. Good thing, too, since my husband’s name is Eric. There’s no special reason why my parents picked it, but I’ve always really liked my name. I hope my daughter feels the same way someday!
Vera says
My name means faith is Russian, but that is not why may parents named me Vera. It is the same as my mom’s, and her’s is the same as her grandmother’s. My family is all very creative but when it comes to names…my brother’s is also the same as my dad’s – enough said?
sara says
fabric me! sara – with no “h” … makes a ‘common’ name just slightly less so ;)
Carolyn says
FABRIC ME! I think my name just happened to be one that my parents both liked and agreed on :).
leslie says
Fabric me!
My names are the middle names of my maternal grandparents – Leslie (grandfather) and Anne (grandmother)
Amy says
Fabric Me! My parents thought Amy Elizabeth was pretty original at the time. Ha! Turns out a LOT of parents in ’75 did too! In my high school class of 180, there were 13 Amy’s, and 5 or 6 of them had my middle name too!
Vera says
OH, and “Fabric me!”
leslie says
Fabric me!
My names are the middle names of my maternal grandparents – Leslie (grandfather) and Anne (grandmother).
Tara says
FABRIC ME!!!!
I am named after where they crowned the kings and queens of Ireland a long, long time ago. Although growing up I always got are you named after the plantation in Gone With the Wind…which I have never ever seen!!
Brittany says
FABRIC ME!
Kristin says
Fabric me!
No meaning to my name- I think my parents just liked how it sounded. Funny thing is that I have a cousin around my same age who had my same first and last name. oops.
Aubrey B. says
FABRIC ME!
“And Aubrey was her name. A not so very ordinary girl or name. But who’s to blame.” Name that tune! And that’s what I was named after. I hated the name growing up, but its becoming very trendy among little girls so I don’t have to spell it to EVERYONE any longer. I actually like it now.
Jessica says
FABRIC ME!
Both my parents liked Elizabeth but couldn’t agree on what the nickname would be (Liz or Beth) so instead I got Jessica
Sarah Renea says
FABRIC ME!
My middle name came from my mother’s middle name. I hope to carry on the tradition with a future daughter.
Margaret says
FABRIC ME!
Margaret is a family name and I’ve never really had a nick-name. But I did luck out over my sister who is a “Harriet Drusilla”, also family names.
Donna C says
Fabric me! I don’t know why my parents picked it — and yes, I wanted to change it.
Cara says
FABRIC ME!
My parents thought they were having a boy and were not prepared. A nurse gave them a baby name book and they went through the A’s, B’s and a few C names until they finally agreed upon one.
Dan'l says
Fabric Me! My name comes from Dan’l Boone (yes, it really does have an apostrophe), and my middle name is Virgil, named after an old song called Virgil Kane. No clue what my parents were smoking, er, thinking.
KatieV says
FABRIC ME!
No exciting meaning behind Katherine, but my parents’ second choice for my name was a family name–Maria (pronounced Mariah), middle name Carey.
@Soleil–lol!!!
Rita says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after aunts on both sides of my family.
Elizabeth says
FABRIC ME!
middle name is after my mom and grandmother.
Emmanuelle says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my paternal great-grand-father. The name works both for a boy (Emmanuel) or for a girl (Emmanuelle), so even though my parents didn’t know if they were having a boy or a girl, they had their name choice down!
Nat says
Fabric Me!
My dad picked my name. A few years ago l found the little notebook with the other options… they were nice but Nat is definitely my fav.
Lesley says
FABRIC ME!!
I am not sure the origin of my name, but all through my childhood everyone spelled it wrong – Leslie vs Lesley. So my parents told me that I was spelling it the Irish way (we are super irish)…not sure if that was accurate but it was a good response! We are in dire need of lots of fabric because we are expecting our first little one and the nursery needs everything!
Lauren says
FABRIC ME!
My name was my dad’s middle name… i was the first girl, in more than 5 generations, in my family with the name – which i took to mean my dad wanted a boy. i grew up wanting something different. Now i have a girl and it is her middle name…. :-)
Kimberly Adams says
FABRIC ME! I’m pretty sure my name was a last minute decision. I’m cool with it.
Kathleen says
Fabric Me!
Strangely enough I’m named after my fathers first girlfriend (not my mother). I never understood, even as a child, how that works. Maybe that explains some of the tension I always had with my mother!
Susann says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after a song my maternal grandfather used to sing: “If you knew Susie like I knew Susie, oh, what a gal.”
Laura says
FABRIC ME!
My last name (married name) was made up by my great-grandfather-in-law who wanted something less Irish sounding, in the days when being Irish was not so good for your career.
Carolyn Ellsworth says
Fabric me! I’m pretty sure my name was just a matter of attrition. It’s the one they could agree on
leslie says
fabric me!!!!!!!!
Hannah says
FABRIC ME!
My parents liked names ending in ‘ah’ sounds, Joanna, Leah etc. There was a Hannah who had a watercolour TV show at the time. It wasn’t a super popular name – until the year I was born!
Dani MP says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Danielle but I go by Dani, which is what my family always called me. My great-grandmother was named Franklin Harrison (first and middle names), so it is kind of a family tradition I think!
Lisa C says
FABRIC ME!!! (Pleeease!!)
My name wasn’t chosen for its meaning or anything. The folks just liked Lisa. My hubs and I, however, settled on our sons name, Isaac, because it means laughter or he who laughs – something we both adored.
Grace says
Fabric me! My parents just liked the name Grace, although I’m sure the meaning of Grace was an added bonus.
Kristy B says
FABRIC ME!
My parents wrote down every girl name in their family, then realized there was no Kristina. So they named me Kristina (but always intended to call me Kristy).
Tiffany says
FABRIC ME! I was supposed to be a Heather, but when I was born my parents couldn’t picture a brunette Heather, so Tiffany it was. Thanks!
kate says
Fabric me!
My mom chose my name (KateLynn) from a novel she read when she was 13.
Kelly says
Fabric Me! My fist name doesn’t have any special story- but my older sister and I have the same middle name (Lynn) because my Mom liked it so much.
Kari Edwards says
FABRIC ME! I’m named after the girl on Little House on the Praire
Jessie says
Fabric me!
My aunt and mom were pregnant at the same time and she liked the names Jessica and Karie. My mom liked both of those names so she chose whichever she didn’t name my cousin. So I got the “leftover” name :)
Vicky McP says
FABRIC ME!
No story – my parents just thought ‘Victoria’ was pretty. Everyone else but my mom calls me Vicky. Mom hates the name Vicky, ha ha. I do still cringe when I hear someone say ‘Victoria Ann’ since that was what I heard when I did something and was about to go running to hide…
Mandi says
FABRIC ME! Yup, just like the Barry Manilow song, only with the “i” at the end. I can’t tell you how many people have broken into song when I have introduced myself.
Zach says
FABRIC ME!
My name means ‘Laughing Rock’, my dad always wanted to name his first born Zach simply because he liked the name, turns out it’s a great descriptor for me. I love to laugh, I love to smile, I think humor is a god’s gift to man! As far as my middle name, the ‘Rock’ part, I think Rock fits well. I’m strong willed and I never give up. If you ask my wife she’d probably say my name fits because I’m funny looking, hard-headed and never remember anything … Either way, I still like my name.
Mackenzie says
Fabric me! Fun name fact. When my mom told my grandma what she was going to name me, my grandma responded maybe you’ll change your mind. :)
Jenny says
“Fabric me” – my name is Jennifer, meaning ‘Fair maiden’. Which is funny, because I am so fair, I am nearly transparent.
Btw, seems like a sneaky way to get a list of baby names. Lol.
Love your blog.
Kim s. says
Fabric me! I apparently don’t know anything about my name….
Kelli says
