Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! My name doesn’t mean anything special. My parents just jumped on the popular name bandwagon in the 80s.

“Ruth” is after the lady in the Bible. I’ve always gone by first and middle; Ruth Anne, because Ruth is such an old lady name. (To me).

My name was a name my parents found in the Bible from a story of a little girl who died and Jesus brought back to life. And it means “little girl”! I really liked the meaning of my full name growing up {with my maiden name} because my it meant “little girl born in the wild, raised by wolves.”

My first name is just one that both my parents liked, but the spelling is a little more unique than the traditional Allison. My mom wanted to find a name with a cute nickname, but of course no one has ever called me Ally! My middle name is extra special because I share it with my grandma- Jane. She was diagnosed with colon cancer the year I was born, and they wanted to have a grandbaby for her in case she didn’t make it. Lucky for all of us, she lived 22 more years!

My mom’s name is Chantal and my name is Melanie. In Quebec where my mom grew up there was a famous singer named Chantal who had a daughter named Melanie. She wrote and recorded a song with her husband about their daughter, Melanie. My mom heard the song and that was it. She decided that had to be the name of her daughter (this was YEARS before having children)

My name means God is my judge… seriously, talk about heavy! I was supposed to be Paul if I was a boy (after Paul McCartney) or Michelle (Beatles song… Michelle… my bell) but my parents had friends with a Michelle & she was supposedly a little terror of a child so Danielle it was. My name is ok, but I prefer to go by Danny or Dan.

I didn’t have a name for the first few days of my life. I was going to be Billie Lee, but my Papa didn’t think my parents should name a girl Billie (his name was Bill Lee, so I guess he pulled rank on them). They finally settled on Kristen and kept the Lee for my middle name, after my Papa.

I was named after a dog. Kind of. The (neighbor’s) dog had no real significance to my parents, but it was the first time my mother had (shockingly) ever heard the name Meghan or even (more shockingly) seen a golden retriever. She liked both (the name and the breed), so I came along and got the name and our first dog was a golden.

First name means “sweet spirit” which I like. My married name comes with it the story that my husband’s ancestors were grooms for royalty, but after stealing the king’s horses were sent to America (Florida) to be a part of a penal colony since we were horse thieves. Lovely. Haven’t stolen any horses lately.
