Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric me! I know my parents named me Heather because it’s the only name the other person didn’t veto. There were some real doozies thrown out. Bobby Jo and Betty Jo included. Although, I’ve always though I should have been Autumn as my birthday is the first day of fall, and I have red hair.

    My name was a last minute choice because my mom was 100% sure I would be a boy so she didn’t even come up with any girl names! Luckily she got to use my boy name when my brother was born 3 years later!

    I’m half Spanish, half English. My mother had an aunt on her English side called Rae, which is an old English form of Rachel. So she decided to honour that family member, but with a Spanish twist!

    My maternal grandmother was a Christine, so I always assumed that I got the shortened version of her name. My middle name is Ellen. My maternal great-grandmother was an Ellen and my paternal great-grandmother was a Nellie.. so, it’s nod to both of them. My folks swear that was a happy accident. I’m so glad to be someone that loves BOTH of her names!

    D=Delightful!
    R=Remarkable!
    E= Energetic!
    A= Amazingly Awesome!

    …Though I suspect that’s not quite what you meant by the meaning behind my name but that’s a way better story than telling you that I was named after a cheerleader that my mom knew in school. I do like my name though. :-) (And my nickname that family calls me “Anndee”).

    FABRIC ME! If I remember correctly, my full first name (Kimberly) means “of the royal fortress meadow”, and I know Kim has a different meaning, but I can’t think of it now. My middle name is Ane, and despite the many many questions it has caused throughout my life (people asking me if I was sure I spelled it right on important documents! lol), I love it because it was my great-grandmother’s name, and since it’s the Danish spelling, it makes a pretty typical middle name into something unique.

    “FABRIC ME!!!” My parents named me Donita, because they wanted to name me after my maternal grandmother. My grandmother’s name was Zenita, and mom did not want to name me that. THANK YOU JESUS! Mom thought she made up my name, but I have met several other Donita’s. I hated my name as a kid and wished my name was Debbie. There are A LOT more Debbie’s in the world then there are Donita’s. SO as an adult I have grown to love my name.

    Absolutely no meaning or significance behind my name, just popular at the time. I hated it growing up in the eighties because it seemed like everyone had that name. You would be in a store and someone would yell “Lisa” and three people would turn around. I used to argue with my mother that my name was really my middle name and she just called me Lisa because it was short. I like it now because you don’t hear it much anymore.

    My parents named me after the Tiffany diamond. You know, the incredibly large yellow cushion cut diamond with a jeweled yellow and white diamond bird perched on top of it. I just found out that it’s only been worn by 2 women in it’s lifetime, one of them being Audrey Hepburn. She wore it for publicity photos for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She is my all-time favorite actress, style icon, and example of grace. How’s that for a name legacy?! Love it! :)

    FABRIC ME! There’s not much of a story behind my name, other than that I’m named after my Great Aunt Lara, but Mom thought that would be hard for people to pronounce so they added the U. The one thing she DIDN’T plan for me was a middle name, so she just popped hers in there and didn’t worry about it. Now I’m the only daughter in the family without four letters in her middle name – Lynn, Jane, and Ann. Grr!

    FABRIC ME!
    Ethne: Means blue blood in Irish (so far as we can tell, it was hard to track down). My folks saw it in a movie called ‘The Four Feathers’ when they were expecting me where Jane Seymour played Ethne. Kate Hudson has more recently played Ethne in the same movie. No one knows how to pronounce it, so it was totally rad when you did, Sherry, at the Mpls book signing.

    Hedren: Swedish. The ancestors decided to use the wife’s maiden name (Hedren) instead of the husband’s (Johnson) because there were so many Johnsons when they came over and settled in MN.

    Denham: The hubby’s (and now my) last name, Scottish. His grandfather moved here at 14.

    Just because it’s interesting, my mom’s maiden name is Wolcott and our ancestors came over from England in 1630, 10 years after the Pilgrims; later, one named Oliver Wolcott signed the Declaration of Independence.

    Our Wolcott branch settled in MI, and then my parents met when my MI mom’s car broke down at the national park my MN dad was working at in WY and they went on to pick an unpronounceable name like Ethne. Oy vey. (that’s German, but I won’t get into that side!)
